Celebrities may be rich and famous, but their money and popularity don’t put them above the law. In fact, celebrity arrests have become too commonplace that it seems like not a week goes by without seeing some star’s mug shot on the news. While celebrity arrests are often highly publicized by the media, there are probably some that you might not know about. Click through below to see if your favorite actors and music artists are one of the many celebs who previously had run-ins with the law.
#1 Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves was arrested for drunk driving in Los Angeles back in 1993. The actor was reportedly stopped and pulled over by a police officer after he was spotted driving erratically. Reeves was said to have admitted to driving under the influence to avoid charges.
Last seen in 2020’s Bill and Ted Face the Music, Reeves is set to return to the big screen in his role as Neo in The Matrix 4. The Lana Wachowski-directed movie is scheduled to open in theaters in December.
#2 Reese Witherspoon
One of the memorable celebrity arrests of 2013 is the detention of Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth in Atlanta. In April of that year, Toth was pulled over under suspicion of driving while intoxicated after weaving across a double line, while Witherspoon was arrested for disobeying the officer’s orders to stay in the vehicle.
Witherspoon pleaded no contest to the charge of obstruction of a person, while Toth pleaded guilty to first offense DUI. The actress paid a total fine of $313 including court costs, while her husband was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service, attend an alcohol education program, and pay a fine. He had also been placed on probation for a year.
#3 Jared Padalecki
In October 2019, Jared Padalecki was arrested on charges of public intoxication and assault with injury following a physical altercation at Stereotype, his own ‘90s-themed bar in Austin, Texas. According to a police affidavit, a verbal spat between Padalecki and the bar’s assistant manager, Ian Flanagan, turned physical when the Supernatural actor allegedly slapped Flanagan in the face.
Stereotype general manager Tyler Carr rushed to the scene and tried to keep the two apart, but he reportedly ended up getting a closed fist punch from the CW star. At the time of the arrest, both Carr and Flanagan said they wanted to pursue assault charges against Padalecki.
#4 Nina Dobrev
Nina Dobrev was arrested for disorderly conduct charges in August 2014 along with her The Vampire Diaries co-stars Sara Canning, Candice Accola, and Kayla Ewell after police said they were dangling off a Georgia overpass and flashing drivers. Also busted during the incident were photographer Tyler Shields and actress Krystal Vayda, who wasn’t part of The CW series.
But the following month, Ewell told Entertainment Weekly that the media reports were “so exaggerated” that the incident had been “made into something it’s not.” According to the actress, they were on a road trip when they decided to stop to take pictures on the bridge.
“[When we were approached by cops] they were like, ‘We’re getting calls that people are flashing,’” Ewell recalled. “And we’re like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa. The only thing that’s flashing is our camera.’” After showing police their photos, the group was asked to follow officials to the police station, where they were ticketed for loitering on a public walkway.

After pleading guilty to felony assault, he was sentenced to two years in jail, but served only 45 days of his sentence.
In 2016, he requested a pardon from the commonwealth of Massachusetts for his conviction for the assault on Trinh. Though his petition for a pardon was ultimately closed after it was met with protests from an Asian American activist group, the process allowed him to meet with and personally apologize to Trinh.
#6 Cher
Some celebrity arrests took place years before the star involved achieves celebrity status. For instance, Cherilyn Sarkisian, aka Cher, was arrested in Los Angeles for “borrowing” her mother’s car and driving it without a license back in 1959, approximately three years before her solo career began.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in May 2013, Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, said that the Just Like Jesse James hitmaker was only 13 or 14 at the time of the arrest, adding that the police called her at 3:30 in the morning to inform her that her daughter was in their custody.
While Cher said she didn’t remember getting photographed for a mugshot, Holt not only remembered it, she actually brought the mugshot along with her to the show, which was flashed on the screen for everyone to see.

When authorities arrived outside the rental home, they saw the star naked and playing drums.
McConaughey was booked on disturbing the peace, suspicion of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest. But the judge dismissed the disturbing the peace and possession misdemeanors outright and his lawyer got the resisting arrest charge dismissed in place of a violation of a sound ordinance, a $50 citation.
In his 2020 memoir, Greenlights, the Oscar-winning actor explained why he was initially charged with resisting arrest. “While I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced,” he wrote. “[They] wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor.” When one of the officers took a blanket off McConaughey’s couch to wrap around the still-naked star, the actor recalled saying: “Ohhh no! … I’m not putting shit on! My naked ass is proof I was mindin’ my own business!”
