Paramount Network has another Yellowstone spinoff on its drawing board.
In February 2023, Deadline exclusively revealed that the network and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan are planning to end the neo-Western drama series in its current form, but are plotting a new show that will continue the story of the parent show.
Is there another Yellowstone spinoff?
Though not official yet, the potential Yellowstone spinoff, which is reportedly being developed to continue the story of the original series, will likely star Matthew McConaughey. According to Deadline, the True Detective actor is currently in talks to headline the new series.
While it’s not yet clear whether the McConaughey-led spinoff will be set on the Dutton ranch in Montana just like the original, Deadline made it clear that the new project is way more than just talk. In fact, it was reported that even though McConaughey will be the face of the new show, several big stars from the parent series are expected to cross over to the spinoff. It is reported that the new show will start on the linear cable channel Paramount Network before streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
Is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone?
Wondering why Paramount Network is considering ending Yellowstone? Deadline reported that idea of wrapping up the series and putting up a new show that will serve as an extension of the original stemmed from disagreements over shooting schedules.
Sources told the news outlet that series lead star Kevin Costner, who had originally limited himself to 65 days of shooting on Yellowstone season 5, only wanted to shoot for 50 days for the first part of the current season. But for the season’s second batch of episodes, the Oscar and Emmy winner only wanted to spend a week shooting.
Since Costner plays the main character, John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton clan, the actor’s request has reportedly been a source of frustration for Sheridan and has caused morale problems for his co-stars, including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham, among many others.
Sources said that Paramount Network declined Costner’s proposal for shortened filming and instead made the decision to move on to the rumored spinoff. It’s not exactly clear why Costner asked for a one-week shooting for the second part of Yellowstone season 5, but Deadline noted that the actor is currently directing and starring in his multi-part western epic film Horizon, which he co-wrote with Jon Baird and hails from Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line.
Paramount Network has yet to confirm or deny Deadline’s report. But a rep for the network told the website: “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”
Has Yellowstone been cancelled?
No. Yellowstone hasn’t been cancelled yet. As previously mentioned, the series is currently in its fifth season. The first part of season 5, which consists of eight episodes, premiered in November 2022 and wrapped up in January 2023. The second part of the season, which is comprised of six episodes, is expected to come out later this 2023. Although Paramount Network remains tight-lipped on the actual fate of the series, Deadline reported that it’s quite possible that Yellowstone will end with the second half of its current season.
When does Yellowstone season 6 start?
Paramount Network has yet to order a sixth season of Yellowstone. But since there’s a report claiming that the series will likely end with its current season 5, there’s a high possibility that the show won’t get another season renewal.
