Fast X, the tenth film in the Fast and Furious franchise, is hitting theaters next month. And even though it’s too early to say how it will fare at the box office, it looks like the future of the action film series has already been set.

Will Fast and Furious 10 be the last one?

No, Fast X is not the final film in the Fast and Furious franchise. When Fast X was first announced back in October 2020, it was revealed that it would be split into two parts. This means that there will be an eleventh film.

This was made official on Wednesday, April 19th, when Universal Pictures announced Louis Leterrier as the director of Fast and Furious 11. Leterrier is the last-minute replacement for Fast X original director Justin Lin, who stepped back from the movie’s directorial duties in May 2022,

In a statement, Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer said the studio is pleased to have Leterrier as the director of Fast and Furious 11.

“Louis Leterrier joined the Fast & Furious team seamlessly, with an innate understanding of the franchise that is stronger than ever after two decades,” stated Cramer. “Under his direction, Fast X is a high-intensity thriller with all the spectacular action, emotion, and twists that the fans have come to expect – and then some. We are thrilled that he will continue to work his magic in the director’s chair.”

Before joining the Fast and Furious franchise, Leterrier was known for his works in The Transporter movies. His other big-screen directorial credits include 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, 2010’s Clash of the Titans, and the 2013 magic heist film Now You See Me. On the TV front, he directed episodes of the critically acclaimed Lupin and the Emmy-winning series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

What will happen in Fast and Furious 11?

Since Fast X is not out yet, plot details about Fast and Furious 11 are scarce. But in an interview for the April 2023 issue of Empire Magazine, director Louis Leterrier teased that the franchise’s final movie will be big in all aspects considering how Fast X will end with higher stakes than ever.

“There’s a war brewing. It’s coming to an end and it is a race to the finish,” Leterrier said of Fast X (via Collider), which will conclude with a major cliffhanger. “There will be some tremendous casualties. This one is big.”

“I don’t want to oversell it,” he said of Fast and Furious 11, which will serve as a companion piece for the tenth film. “But what we’re planning on the next one (Fast and Furious 11) is just gigantic, in terms of action, scope, and emotion. You will feel all the feels. Tears will roll.”

Will Brian be in Fast and Furious 11?

Paul Walker's as Brian O'Connor in the Fast and Furious franchise - Will the character return for Fast and Furious 11?

Brian O’Conner is one of the original main characters of the Fast and Furious franchise. His character played a major role from the first film of the franchise up to the seventh installment, titled Fate of the Furious. But following the real-life death of Paul Walker, the actor who played the character, Brian retired from the team headed by Dominic Toretto (Diesel) to live a normal life with his family.

Although Brian is still very much alive in the franchise, it’s not clear whether there are plans to bring the character back to the spotlight for the final Fast and Furious film. If Universal Pictures decide to do so, they can either recast the character or use CGI to bring Walker back to life.

What will happen in Fast X?

Launching the final chapter of the Fast and Furious franchise, Fast X will follow globe-trotting street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team as they look to fend off a pair of big bads that are out for them — the cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) and her mysterious cohort, Dante (Jason Momoa).

In 2011’s Fast Five, Dom and his crew brought down the infamous Brazilian drug lord Hernan Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) and dismantled his empire on a bridge in Rio de Janeiro. Unbeknown to them, Reyes’ son, Dante, witnessed it all and has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plan to make Dom pay the ultimate price.
