The long wait for Upload season 2 will soon be over.
Amazon Prime Video announced last week that the entire seven-episode sophomore run of the sci-fi comedy series will be available to watch on the streaming service starting Friday, March 11th, almost two years after the show debuted in May 2020.
Conceived by The Office creator Greg Daniels, Upload is set in 2033 where people can be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife of their choice. The series centers on a young app developer named Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell), who wound up in the hospital following a self-driving car accident. Needing to quickly decide his fate, he ultimately chose to be uploaded to the Horizen company’s luxurious virtual afterlife called Lakeview, only to find himself under the thumb of his possessive, still-living girlfriend Ingrid Kannerman (Allegra Edwards) whom he tried to break up with.
As he adjusts to the pros and cons of digital heaven, Nathan has formed a special bond with Nora Antony (Andy Allo), a living woman who serves as his handler in the afterlife. Nora struggles with the pressures of her job, her dying father who does not want to be “uploaded,” as well as her growing romantic feelings for Nathan while slowly coming to believe that he was murdered.
What happened in Upload season 1 finale?
In Upload season 1 finale, Nathan downgraded his paid Lakeview account to the free version, making him one of the lower-tier class residents who can only afford two free gigabytes of data per month.
Nora, meanwhile, escaped an attempt on her life by a hitman who had likely been paid by the same people who murdered Nathan. She also confessed her love to a frozen Nathan before heading to a remote location where she’ll be safe but cut off from technology.
Soon after reawakening from his freeze, Nathan was also visited by Ingrid who told him that she’s willingly died to be “uploaded” to Lakeview and be with him.
What will happen in Upload season 2?
According to the official synopsis for season 2, the new batch of episodes will open with Nathan finding himself at a crossroads in his afterlife. Ingrid has unexpectedly arrived to Lakeview hoping to strengthen her relationship with Nathan, but his heart still secretly yearns for his customer service angel Nora, who will be off the grid at the beginning of the new season and be involved with the anti-tech rebel group “The Ludds.”
The synopsis also notes that season 2 will introduce new near-future concepts, including Lakeview’s newest in-app digital baby program called “prototykes.”
Without giving away any specific plot details, Amell told Comic Book Resources in September 2020 that season 2 might feature “more of the supporting characters” than last season.
“I think you’ll probably get to see a little bit more of the supporting characters this season, which is awesome,” Amell said. “I think Zainab [Johnson], Kevin [Bigley], and Allegra [Edwards] are so funny and so talented. I’m excited to see more from them and the show ended on a big moment for a lot of the characters and I’m excited to see where it goes.”
