Since last April, Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles has been sharing photos and videos of him on Instagram, in which he can be seen sporting his long shaggy hair and big bushy beard for his superhero role in the upcoming season 3 of Amazon’s The Boys. But those aren’t the only physical preparation he has done for his first post-Supernatural project. On Thursday, the actor posted a video of him working out, revealing for the first time that he has been trying to make his body more ripped and bulkier for his new role.
“Okay @stephenamell, @grantgust and all you other Supes out there…I’m beginning to understand the struggle. Or maybe I’m just too old for this crap,” Ackles captioned the video.
In the clip itself, Ackles is seen lifting a pair of dumbbells, before commenting, “These superhero workouts are much different. It was so much easier when all I had to do was wear flannel.”

Unsurprisingly, Supernatural fans, who are not used to seeing Ackles flexing his huge muscles on social media, have gone crazy over his superhero workout video. A lot of them can’t believe how Ackles’ figure has changed since they last saw him in the series finale of Supernatural last November. And since it’s rare to see Ackles showing off his body online, fans make sure to enjoy the moment.

As announced last August, Ackles will play Soldier Boy in season 3 of The Boys. Soldier Boy is The Boys’ direct parody of Captain America and the eventual leader of the superhero team Payback, which is the show’s twisted version of Marvel’s Avengers.
“I think anyone expecting Jensen to show up and be a good guy, they will be disappointed. I’ll say that!” Kripke told Variety last October. “In the comics he’s mostly just kind of bumbling and subservient to Homelander (Antony Starr), I would say. As we’re writing him in this, we’re getting to really talk about the history of Vought because he’s like John Wayne. He’s one of these guys that’s been around for decades of Vought history. And he was Homelander before Homelander, so he’s from a different era, but he’s got the ego and the ambition — it just comes across in a different way because he’s from a different time.”
Filming for season 3 of The Boys is ongoing in Toronto. While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the show could possibly return to Amazon Prime Video in late summer or early fall.
