When it was announced last July that Daredevil Born Again was in development for Disney+, it was not clear whether it was going to be a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil or would be a reboot. More details about the series have been revealed at last weekend’s D23 Expo, and it looks like it’s going to be a whole new show.
In an interview with Extra, Charlie Cox, who will be reprising his role as Daredevil in the Disney+ series, said that he hasn’t read any script yet, but based on the show’s title alone, he thinks it will be completely different from the Netflix series.
“I don’t know anything. I haven’t seen a script,” Cox said. “My feeling is, based on the title Born Again, I think that the sense is it is a new beginning, it is going to be different, it is going to be totally different. It is going to be new stories, and new ideas.”
The actor also reiterated what Marvel President Kevin Feige previously said about Daredevil Born Again. “It is a season 1, it is not season 4,” the actor said. “So, it is a whole new thing, which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.”
Daredevil Born Again plot
Plot details about Daredevil Born Again are being kept under wraps, but it will be based on the 1986 comic book story arc of the same name. Written by Frank Miller and drawn by David Mazzucchelli, the Daredevil Born Again comic book series details Daredevil’s descent into insanity and destitution at the Kingpin’s hands, as well as a subsequent struggle to build a new life for himself.
The 18-episode series will be part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which includes the movies Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, and Blade, as well as the TV series Secret Invasion, Loki season 2, and Ironheart, among many others.
Daredevil Born Again cast
In addition to Cox, the new series will also star Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin. D’Onofrio made his debut appearance as the Kingpin on the Netflix series Daredevil and also appeared on Disney+’s Hawkeye.
Daredevil Born Again release date
Daredevil Born Again doesn’t have an exact release date yet but it was announced at the San Diego Comic-Con last July that it will arrive on Disney+ sometime in spring 2024. Last August, it was revealed that the series was set to begin production on May 8th, 2023 in New York City.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil
Cox first played Daredevil, a.k.a. Matt Murdock, on Netflix’s Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018. The MCU character last appeared in the 2021 movie Spider-Man: No Way Home during an early scene in which he gave the titular web-slinger legal advice and showed off his superhuman reflexes.
Prior to starring in his own series, Cox’s Daredevil is set to guest star on Disney+’s She-Hulk, starring Tatiana Maslany in the titular role. When asked by Extra which MCU actor he would like to appear in Daredevil Born Again, Cox said, “I really want Tatiana to come back… I had such a blast working with her and the characters’ chemistry was so fun and I’m really excited to see that episode… so I would love for her to make an appearance in the show.”
In the same interview, Cox didn’t forget to express his gratitude to all the Daredevil fans who campaigned so hard for him to get the role for the second time.
“A huge shout-out to the Save Daredevil folks because really, they went to work and they didn’t give up on that dream,” the actor told Extra. “And there was a long period of time where I was like, ‘I don’t think it is going to happen, guys.’ It is really emotional to be given this second life when you have already developed such a love for the character and the people, and now we are embarking on this whole new journey and it is the beginning again. I feel so grateful and excited and I’m nervous all over again, you know what I mean? It is a wild journey. It is the gift that keeps on giving.”
