Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live, a musical based on the wildly popular manga of the same name, has set its show dates in Washington, D.C. and New York City.

Directed and choreographed by TAKAHIRO (Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet Tour) with book by Akiko Kodama (Takarazuka Revue Company), and music by HYADAIN (Momoiro Clover Z; AKB48), Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live will have its U.S. premiere in Washington, D.C. for one performance only at The Warner Theater on March 24th at 7 p.m. The musical will then play at the PlayStation Theater in New York City on March 29th at 8 p.m. and on March 30th at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live will be the first 2.5D musical to be performed in the U.S. 2.5D musicals, which began around 2000, are based on popular contemporary Japanese culture: manga comics, anime, and video games. Manga and animation are in 2D, while live theatre is in 3D. So, they call performances based on manga and animations 2.5D.

Similar to its manga, anime, TV show, and feature film counterparts, the musical follows adventures of Usagi Tsukino and her magical alter ego Sailor Moon. The musical also features Usagi’s love interest Tuxedo Mask and her fellow sailor scouts Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, producer Takaharu Uera said in a statement that “at its core, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is about strong girlfriends banding together to fight for what they believe in… that’s timely.”  Uera added: “Sailor Moon and her Sailor Guardians are equipped with powers that help them defeat evil and the characters are imbued with the self-determination to make their own confident decisions. In short, they are the ultimate example of ‘girl power.’”

Like the Japanese production of the musical, the U.S. run of the play will feature an entirely female cast, including an actress who will play Tuxedo Mask. The production’s acting ensemble includes Tomomi Kasai, Momoko Kaechi, Yui Hasegawa, Kanna Matsuzaki, Yu Nakanishi, Makoto Aikawa, Reo Sanada, Atsumi Matsubayashi, Izumi Niihashi, Ayumi Higashikawa, Moeko Koizumi, Hinako Aikawa, and Riona Tatemichi.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon The Super Live will be performed in Japanese with English “supertitles.”
