It looks like Star Trek fans will soon find out what became of Wesley Crusher following his last appearance in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis.
According to We Got This Covered, actor Wil Wheaton will reprise his role as Wesley in a future season of Star Trek: Picard. Sources ― the same ones who told the website that Captain Pike was getting his own spinoff show and that the Justice League Snyder Cut will be released on HBO Max, which both turned out to be true ― said that Wheaton’s return would not happen in season 2 but would likely take place in season 3 instead.
It’s not yet clear how Wesley will cross paths with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), but it was reported that he’ll show up on the CBS All Access series, along with other Star Trek: The Next Generation characters, to help the La Sirena crew in a fight against a common enemy.
Wheaton made his debut appearance as Wesley in the series premiere of The Next Generation back in 1987. He was a regular character in the first four seasons of the series and appeared sporadically in the next three seasons.
Though Picard hasn’t been renewed yet for a third season, series co-creator Akiva Goldsman recently revealed that they’ve thought of making three to five seasons of the sci-fi drama.
The news of Wesley’s potential comeback doesn’t really come as a surprise, as Stewart recently suggested that more The Next Generation alums are coming to Picard.
“In meetings when we talked about bringing in members of The Next Generation crew, that was one of the things I was most passionate about, which was not only should Picard have changed during the 18 years that had passed, but the same has to be applied to Counselor Troi (Marina Sirtis), to Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes), to whoever it is,” Stewart said in an interview with Gold Derby earlier this month. “I am very hopeful we will see more of The Next Generation crew before we say goodbye to Picard.”
The Next Generation cast members Frakes, Sirtis, and Brent Spiner (Data) all appeared in season 1 of Picard. For season 2, Whoopi Goldberg is already confirmed to reprise her role as Guinan. And though there’s no official announcement yet, LeVar Burton revealed in April that he’s in talks to reprise his role as Geordi La Forge in Picard.
Season 2 of Picard has no release date yet, but it’s expected to arrive on CBS All Access sometime in 2021.
