Amazon Studios dropped the second Coming 2 America trailer on Thursday, and while it’s just as long as the first one released last December, the new promo video features more actual scenes from the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 box-office hit Coming to America.
Directed by Craig Brewer from a screenplay by Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein, and David Sheffield, the follow-up movie finds King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) ― along with his best friend and aide Semmi (Arsenio Hall) ― back in New York City after discovering he had fathered a child in America while visiting 30 years ago.
The new Coming 2 America trailer opens with the duo entering the barbershop they used to frequent during their first trip to the country. “Hey whatchu doing back here,” barber Clarence (also played by Murphy) greets King Akeem, who reveals that he is looking for his long-lost son to prepare him as the future ruler of Zamunda. When Semmi mentions that the king is not paying any child support, Clarence’s fellow barber Morris (also played by Hall) cackles, “No child support for 30 years and you came back? You’s a dummy!”
The video then cuts to King Akeem finally meeting his son Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) and his mom Mary (Leslie Jones). “He’s supposed to be like the prince of Wakanda?” asks Mary, who has trouble wrapping her mind around her son’s lot in life. When King Akeem reminded Mary that Black Panther’s Wakanda is a fictional place, she whispers, “Not to everybody.”
The quartet then travels back to the African nation of Zamunda, where things start to get more interesting. Mary apologizes to King Akeem’s wife, Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), for sleeping with him, prompting her to say that he wasn’t the first man she’s been with.
The relationships among the members of the blended family are further put to test when King Akeem discovers that Princess Meeka (Kiki Layne), his eldest daughter with Queen Lisa, also wants to be his heir. This presents a huge dilemma for King Akeem, as his ailing father (James Earl Jones) says in the first Coming 2 America trailer that the throne must only be passed to a male heir.
Amid all the family drama, the latest Coming 2 America trailer also teases a potential coup led by General Izzy (Wesley Snipes) who wants to take over Zamunda.
Coming 2 America was supposed to open in theaters through Paramount Pictures, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film’s domestic distribution rights were sold to Amazon Studios.
Coming 2 America, which also stars Tracy Morgan and Teyana Taylor, arrives on Amazon Prime Video on March 5th.
