The latest addition to the Disney Designer Collection’s Ultimate Princess Celebration has been unveiled.
Officially revealed on Tuesday, the newest member of the designer doll collection is based on Princess Aurora in the 1959 Disney animated classic Sleeping Beauty. Named after the pseudonym used by the titular character in the movie, the Briar Rose doll is dressed in a detailed couture ombre gown with a petal hem. Adding more glam to the doll’s outfit is a billowing cloak designed with floral watercolor print, metallic embroidery, and gemstone studs.
Standing 11 inches tall, the fully poseable Briar Rose doll has finely styled hair with a floral hair fixture as an accessory. Completing her overall look are a pair of floral earrings and a pair of sandal-strap shoes.
A collector’s item of just 5,500 pieces, the Briar Rose doll also includes a display stand and a certificate of authenticity. It also comes packaged in an elegant box with a gatefold cover, foil decoration, magnetic closure, and a fancy window display feature.
Who designed the Briar Rose doll?
The Briar Rose doll was designed by Ricard Chan, a Shanghai-based fashion designer for the product development team at Disney. Born in Taiwan, Chan, at a young age, moved with his family to South Africa where he grew up. He then went to London’s Central Saint Martins art school, where he received a degree in fashion design. Prior to being a Disney employee, Chan worked in Paris, which inspired his creative ethos to challenge norms in innovative ways.
Chan’s earliest memory of Disney was when his parents brought home a VHS tape of Sleeping Beauty. He was only 6-year-old at the time, but he remembers being captivated by the story and the movie’s gothic-inspired design. Aurora’s story of being born in one place and being whisked away to another life far from her home resonated with Chan’s own life of moving to a different country at a young age.
When given the chance to work on a dress for Aurora as Briar Rose, Chan interpreted the look as if the character designed the gown herself guided by her own taste and worldview. Since Briar Rose is a forest maiden, Chan imagined that nature would inspire her design. As a result, the doll’s dress takes cues from the subtle tones of flowers, embellished with petal-like embroidery, creating an elegant ensemble.
