Why did Mattel stop making Disney dolls?
Mattel has been manufacturing toys based on the Disney Princess line and the Frozen franchise for about 20 years. The toymaker, however, lost the Disney Princess license to its rival company Hasbro in 2016, causing a period of financial troubles at Mattel and multiple executive turnovers within the company.
But in January 2022, Mattel president and chief operating officer Richard Dickson proudly announced that they have recouped the rights to make Disney Princess toys, with brand new items set to become available for purchase at the beginning of 2023. Mattel said at the time that its Disney Princess business will be managed by the same group that oversees its Barbie franchise.
Is Barbie a part of Disney?
No. Barbie is not a part of Disney. Though Barbie appeared in Toy Story movies, the iconic doll brand is owned by Mattel. Some people think Barbie is part of Disney because Mattel, as mentioned above, manufactures both Barbie dolls and Disney Princess toys.
