What is Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a Japanese media franchise that started as a manga series. Written and illustrated by Kazuki Takahashi, the manga was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine between September 1996 and March 2004. The plot centers on a boy named Yugi, who solves the ancient Millennium Puzzle. Yugi awakens a gambling alter-ego or spirit within his body who solves his conflicts using various games.

An anime TV series adaptation of the manga, produced by Toei Animation, aired on Japan’s TV Asahi from April to October 1998. That TV show was followed by an anime movie released in March 1999. Six months later, a novel hit the shelves.

Another anime TV series based on the manga was released in 2000. Titled Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, the show ran for five seasons until its finale in 2004. A short-lived anime TV series called Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monsters aired from September to November 2006.

In addition to the original 1999 Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, the franchise has also released the following films: 2004’s Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light, 2010’s Yu-Gi-Oh!: Bonds Beyond Time, and 2016’s Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions.

Aside from TV series and movies, several video games and trading card games were also created based on the original manga series.
