A Discovery of Witches season 2 just premiered last month, and while its 10-episode run won’t end until the second week of March, a lot of fans are already wondering whether the British fantasy drama is returning for another season.
So, will there be A Discovery of Witches season 3? The answer is yes, but it will also be the show’s last.
Season 3 of the series was announced at the same time as season 2 back in November 2018. But it’s only at the end of 2020 when it was confirmed that season 3 will serve as the final season of the series.
Though it’s definitely sad news for fans, it didn’t really come as a huge surprise, as the show is based on the trilogy of novels (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life) by Deborah Harkness collectively called as All Souls.
“As far as the trilogy is concerned, the next [third] season is the last,” star Matthew Goode confirmed to Digital Spy during a break in filming season 3 at the end of 2020.
Though Harkness actually wrote a fourth book titled, Time’s Convert, which focuses on Marcus’ (Edward Bluemel) vampire origin story and his relationship with his human girlfriend Phoebe (Adelle Leonce), there’s no word yet on whether it will also be adapted to TV.
“There is a fourth book that is Marcus’ book,” added Goode’s co-lead star Teresa Palmer. “Maybe that would be developed into another season, but for right now, this is the end of the road.”
What will happen in A Discovery of Witches season 3?
Though season 2 is still ongoing, fans who have read the final installment of Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy already know that season 3 will reunite historian-alchemist Diana (Palmer) and her vampire lover Matthew (Goode) with the modern-day residents of Sept Tours. And since it’s based on the last book of the novel series, the new season is also expected to wrap up the love story between the two lead characters.
Who will be in A Discovery of Witches season 3?
In addition to Palmer and Goode, other cast members who are expected to reprise their roles in season 3 include Bluemel, Leonce, Lindsay Duncan (Ysabeau), Alex Kingston (Sarah), Gregg Chillin (Domenico), Teale (Peter Knox), Trevor Eve (Gerbert), Jacob Ifan (Benjamin), and Steven Cree (Gallowglass).
When will A Discovery of Witches season 3 premiere?
Production on season 3 started in Wales in late 2020 under COVID-19 restrictions. And just last week, Palmer revealed on Instagram that the final season had officially wrapped up filming.

But since season 2 took almost a year to go from filming to broadcast, it’s likely that season 3 will premiere at the end of 2021 or early 2022.
