Has The Wheel of Time been canceled or renewed for season 2? 1

The Wheel of Time season 1 is down to its last two episodes, and if you’re wondering if the Amazon series is returning for season 2, then we’re happy to let you know that the epic fantasy drama had been renewed for a sophomore run well ahead of the show’s launch.

The Wheel of Time season 2 renewal was announced last May – six months before the series’ world premiere on Amazon Prime Video this past November.

Based on Robert Jordan’s novel series of the same name and produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television, The Wheel of Time is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. Developed by showrunner Rafe Judkins, the series stars Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the “Aes Sedai” as she arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

“The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in The Wheel of Time has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show. Getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to continue to live and work in the world Robert Jordan created,” said Judkins in a statement released last May. “This property is one I’ve loved since I was a teenager, and seeing it brought to life with the resources to make it truly worthy of what’s on the page is something I can’t wait for the other fans of the books to see. And season 2 just keeps expanding the world we built in season 1.”

In addition to Pike, series regulars Daniel Henney (al’Lan Mandragoran), Zoë Robins (Nynaeve al’Meara), Madeleine Madden (Egwene al’Vere), Josha Stradowski (Rand al’Thor), Marcus Rutherford (Perrin Aybara), Kate Fleetwood (Liandrin Guirale), Priyanka Bose (Alanna Mosvani), Hammed Animashaun  (Loial), and Sophie Okonedo (Siuan Sanche) are expected to return for season 2.

However, Barney Harris, who plays Mat Cauthon in season 1, won’t be coming back next season. Last September, it was announced that Harris will be replaced by Dónal Finn, who recently appeared on the Netflix shows Cursed and The Witcher. Though the reason for the recasting is unclear, Harris’ exit from The Wheel of Time may have something to do with the lengthy and complex overseas shoot of the series in Czech Republic.

Though season 2 plot details are being kept under wraps, it was revealed last October that Ceara Coveney (The Amazing World of Emma), Natasha O’Keeffe (Peaky Blinders) and Meera Syal (Broadchurch) are joining the show as series regulars in season 2. Coveney will portray fan-favorite character Elayne Trakand. O’Keeffe and Syal, meanwhile, will be appearing in the series in undisclosed roles.

The Wheel of Time season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but filming for the new season is scheduled to conclude in February 2022.

The Wheel of Time’s penultimate and final season 1 episodes are set to drop on Amazon Prime Video on December 17th and December 24th, respectively.
