All Macy’s stores across the United States are getting a Toys R Us shop.
The department store chain announced on Monday that it is bringing the beloved Toys R Us brand to all of its stores in the country in time for the holiday season later this year.
Macy’s Toys R Us in-store shops will range from 1,000 sq. feet and span up to 10,000 sq. feet in flagship locations, including Lenox Square, Atlanta; State Street, Chicago; Ala Moana, Honolulu; Memorial City, Houston; South Coast Plaza, LA; Aventura, Miami; Dadeland, Miami; Herald Square, NYC; Roosevelt Field, NYC; Union Square, San Francisco; and Valley Fair, San Jose.
The floor area of these shops may get an additional 500 to 3,000 sq. feet during the holiday season to offer an even wider assortment of products.
The in-store shops will come to life with playful colored fixtures as well as hands-on demonstration tables for customers to interact with various toy assortments. Each shop will also feature a life-size “Geoffrey on a Bench” photo opportunity for kids and the entire family.
When will Macy’s Toys R Us in-store shops open?
The opening of the shops will start later this month, with all locations expected to be operational by October 15th. To celebrate the openings, all Macy’s stores will host in-store events for nine days, beginning October 15th through October 23rd. The events will feature various family-friendly activities as well as daily giveaways from brands like Barbie, LEGO, and more.
“Macy’s cannot wait to bring the Toys R Us experience to life in our stores,” said Nata Dvir, Macy’s chief merchandising officer, in a press release announcing the huge move. “We hope Toys R Us kids of all ages discover the joy of exploration and play within our shops and families create special memories together.”
Macy’s and Toys R Us partnership
Macy’s and Toys R Us first joined forces last August when Toys R Us products started to become available at macys.com/toysrus and when Toys R Us launched its own website powered by Macy’s digital and fulfillment ecosystem.
In its reported earnings for the first quarter of 2022, Macy’s said that its toy sales were 15 times higher than the comparable period before its partnership with Toys R Us started.
Toys R Us comeback
After being squeezed by debt and tough competition from large online platforms like Amazon and Walmart, Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017, resulting in the closure of all its U.S. locations.
In 2018, Tru Kids bought the toy brand during a liquidation sale and later opened two new pop-up locations in New Jersey and Texas. Both stores, however, were permanently closed in January due to poor mall traffic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, WHP Global purchased a controlling interest in Tru Kids and opened the newest flagship store of the toy brand in December of that year inside American Dream, a premier retail and entertainment complex in Bergen County, New Jersey.
While fans wait for the opening of Macy’s Toy R Us in-store shops, fans, as mentioned above, can shop for the products of the toy brand online at Macy’s and Toy R Us websites.
