Supernatural creator Eric Kripke has apologized to series star Jared Padalecki after the latter revealed that he was “gutted” by the announcement of a Supernatural spinoff that he isn’t involved in.
Padalecki’s Supernatural costar Jensen Ackles announced last week that he was developing a prequel to the original series. Titled The Winchesters, the potential show would revolve around John and Mary Winchester and would be told from Dean Winchester’s perspective, with Jensen returning as the narrator.
The news took Padalecki by surprise, as it was the first time he had heard about the project. “Dude. Happy for you,” Padalecki wrote, while quote-tweeting Jensen’s post. “Wish I heard about this some way other than Twitter. I’m excited to watch, but bummed that Sam Winchester had no involvement whatsoever.”
When asked by a fan if he was joking, Jared replied: “No. It’s not. This is the first I’ve heard about it. I‘m gutted.”
Kripke responded to the situation by admitting that he incorrectly assumed Padelecki knew about the spinoff. Kripke had earlier tweeted that he “loved” the concept of the prequel and described Ackles, his wife Danneel Ackles, and Supernatural producer Robbie Thompson as “the perfect people to make it.”
“Guys. When I wrote this, I assumed Jared knew. I was wrong,” Kripe wrote in a now-deleted tweet. “I already apologized to him & @jarpad & @JensenAckles worked it out. I love them both like brothers, both equally contributed to #SPN. Families have bumps, they overcome them, that’s why they’re family. #SPNFamily.”
Following Padalecki’s initial tweets, the actor shared that he and Ackles already “had a great talk”, noting that “things are good” between them.
“The show is early in the process with miles to go,” Padalecki added. “We’ve travelled a lot of roads together, and sometimes those damn roads have bumps. Bumps don’t stop us.”
For his part, Ackles tweeted, “Love you @jarpad… Miss these talks. I forgot how much face time we always used to get. And I miss that too. I know you’re busy… as am I, but you’re still my brother.”
The Winchesters currently has a script commitment with The CW.
