Superman and Lois may end up leaving The CW, here’s why

Will The CW renew Superman and Lois for a fourth season?

The ongoing third season of Superman and Lois may be the show’s final batch of episodes on The CW, as the network appears to favor low-cost imports and unscripted shows than homegrown original scripted series for its 2023-24 programming slate.

Has Superman and Lois been cancelled or renewed for season 4?

Superman and Lois has not been cancelled or renewed for another season yet, but it’s one of the three shows on The CW that is currently on the bubble. The two other series whose fates are up in the air include its fellow DC series Gotham Knights and All American: Homecoming.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The CW is reviewing the costs for all three programs, with sources saying that Brad Schwartz, entertainment president of Nexstar (the new owner of The CW), “wants to keep at least one DC show on the network with a move to HBO Max possible for the veteran (and pricey) Superman and Lois.”

But if Superman and Lois ends up getting renewed for a fourth season on The CW, fans can expect that the new season won’t have more than 13 episodes. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that regardless of how many originals the network decided to renew, none of them will feature episode counts of more than 13.

As of this writing, The CW has renewed All American and Walker for new seasons and has cancelled Kung-Fu, The Winchesters, and Walker: Independence.

Whether Superman and Lois will stay on The CW or move to HBO Max, it appears that the show will continue for a couple more seasons despite DC Studios’ plan to reboot the Caped Crusader with 2025’s Superman: Legacy movie.

“It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit,” James Gunn, co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios, told reporters during a presentation in January 2023.

What’s happening in Superman and Lois season 3?

Debuted in March 2023, Superman and Lois season 3 picks up weeks after Superman’s (Tyler Hoechlin) blowout defeat of Ally Allston (Rya Kihlstedt). Clark (Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tullock) are now working at the Smallville Gazette together and enjoying small-town life.

Chrissy (Sofia Hasmik) struggles to balance a new love interest and her friendship with Lois, whose work-life balance is also put to the test when an undercover assignment reveals a deadly foe that promises to change the Kent family forever. Superman would move heaven and earth for his family, but with a villain this merciless, even that might not be enough.

Meanwhile, the Kent siblings Jonathan (Michael Bishop) and Jordan (Alex Garfin) find themselves being pulled in opposite directions. Amid all this upheaval, John Henry (Wolé Parks) is haunted by his doppelgänger’s past, leading to dangerous consequences for him and Natalie (Tayler Buck).

As for the Cushings, Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and Kyle (Erik Valdez) redefine their family post-separation, while Sarah (Inde Navarrette) explores what the future holds for her and Jordan now that she knows the truth about his powers.

Having learned the hard way that no one else can be trusted to work with Superman, General Samuel Lane (Dylan Walsh) reclaims his post at the Department of Defense, only to face his own conflict in working with his grandson, Jordan.
