Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is reunited with his old friend Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) in the official trailer for Star Trek: Picard season 2.
Released last Friday, the promo video opens with the La Sirena being attacked by three unknown ships. While trying to save themselves, Picard and the rest of the Las Sirena crew suddenly find themselves in 21st-century Earth, where the former is welcomed by his old enemy, Q (John de Lancie).
When Picard asks Q what exactly he has done, the highly powerful entity simply replies, “Welcome to the road not taken.” Later in the trailer, Picard tells his crew that “there is a divergence” and he knows someone who can help them “understand the change in time.”
As revealed in the trailer, that someone is Guinan. Appearing in 28 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation between 1988 and 1993, the El-Aurian was a bar hostess aboard the USS Enterprise who has formed a special friendship with Picard. Along with Picard, Guinan also appeared in the 1994 movie Star Trek: Generations and 2003’s Star Trek: Nemesis.
“I’m going to need some tea. Earl Grey. Piping hot,” Guinan tells Picard right after meeting him at a bar for the first time after several years. After Picard opens up about the “time” mess he and the La Sirena crew find themselves in, Guinan reminds him: “Your answers are not in the stars and they never have been. I believe you have one final frontier yet to come.”

As fans can remember, Stewart surprised Goldberg with a “formal invitation” to join the cast of Star Trek: Picard for its season 2 during an appearance on The View back in January 2020. “I’m here with a formal invitation, and it’s for you, Whoopi,” the actor said at the time. “Alex Kurtzman, who is the senior executive producer of Star Trek: Picard, and all his colleagues, of which I am one, want to invite you into the second season.”
Stewart’s offer elicited applause and cheers from the studio audience as Goldberg giggled in disbelief. Still shocked by what she heard, Goldberg stood up from her seat and gave Stewart a big hug. And when the actor begged her to “please say yes,” Goldberg did so with a smile.
Also featured in the official trailer for Star Trek: Picard season 2 are returning original cast members Spiner (Altan Inigo Soong), Alison Pill (Agnes Jurati), Isa Briones (Dahj/Soji Asha), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker), Santiago Cabrera (Chris Rios), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), and Orla Brady (Laris). The video also includes glimpses of series newcomer Annie Wersching as the Borg Queen.
Star Trek: Picard season 2 will premiere on March 3rd on Paramount+, with new episodes dropping weekly on the streamer every Thursday.
