Picard season 3 will boldly change Star Trek canon

Co-showrunner Terry Matalas teases what fans can expect from Star Trek: Picard season 3

Picard season 3 will boldly change Star Trek canon

Star Trek: Picard season 3 will feature a universe-altering event.

In a cover feature for SFX magazine ahead of the season 2 premiere of the Paramount+ series, co-showrunner Terry Matalas teased that the Star Trek universe won’t be the same again after the third and rumored final season of Picard.

When SFX asked about the weight of canon bearing down on Picard’s sophomore run, Matalas answered, “Not so much in season 2,” but season 3 is entirely another story. “Definitely in season 3, there are some game-changing Star Trek universe ideas,” revealed Matalas. “Season 2, as epic in scope as it is, is an intimate story.”

Matalas went on to suggest that Picard season 3 may connect to the cinematic adventures of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) crew, who originated from the Star Trek: The Original Series.

“There are a few nods to the Kirk movies,” Matalas said of Picard season 3. “I grew up with the original series and the Kirk movies. That’s my Star Trek. So you’ll see a few of those things kind of tie some Star Trek together.”

Aside from the game-changing Star Trek universe ideas that will be featured in Picard season 3, Matalas added that the season will also tell “a really fascinating and heartbreaking psychological exploration of Picard (Jean-Luc Picard) that no one is expecting,” courtesy of co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman.

Unlike Matalas, Goldsman was tight-lipped about Picard season 3. “I have no words for you about season 3 except to say you should watch it,” Goldsman told SFX.

Is Picard season 3 the show’s final installment?

While Paramount+ has yet to confirm whether Picard season 3 will serve as the conclusion of the series, it won’t really be a surprise if that ends up being the case. For one, the show got fast-tracked for a season 3 renewal last September and was later revealed to have started filming at the same time as the show’s season 2. Furthermore, when Paramount+ announced a number of season renewals last month, Picard was one of the few ongoing Star Trek series that didn’t get a season pickup.

Picard season 2 will premiere on Paramount+ on March 3rd, while Picard season 3 is expected to premiere in early 2023.
