Horizon Zero Dawn TV series in the works at Netflix

A TV adaptation of the PlayStation video game Horizon Zero Dawn is in early development at Netflix.

The exciting news was revealed by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra in an investor briefing on Thursday and was confirmed by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan at a Q&A following the initial briefing.

Horizon Zero Dawn TV adaptation

Details about the project are scarce. In fact, it’s not clear whether the TV adaptation will focus solely on the initial video game or the broader Horizon franchise, which includes the recently released sequel Horizon Forbidden West. And since it is still early days for the adaptation, there is always the possibility that it does not move past the current stage.

Horizon Zero Dawn video game

Developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Horizon Zero Dawn tells the story of Aloy, a young huntress in a world overrun by machines, who sets out to uncover her past. Players use ranged weapons, a spear, and stealth to combat mechanical creatures and other enemy forces. The video game features a skill tree that provides players with new abilities and bonuses. Released for the PlayStation 4 in 2017 and Microsoft Windows in 2020, Horizon Zero Dawn allows players to explore the open world to discover locations and take on side quests.

Its sequel Horizon Forbidden West was released in February 2022 and is available for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

Gran Turismo movie adaptation

Also revealed on Thursday is a movie adaptation of the iconic PlayStation driving video game Gran Turismo. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are developing the film, with Neill Blomkamp being eyed to direct.

The plot of the movie is being kept under wraps, but the news comes as reports surfaced yesterday that a TV adaptation of the racing game is also in the works and is aimed at a streaming service. Deadline noted that those reports are not accurate.

Other Sony video game adaptations

The Horizon Zero Dawn TV series and the Gran Turismo movie join an ever-growing roster of adaptations for PlayStation’s video games, including a God of War TV series that is currently in development at Amazon Prime Video.

The furthest one among all upcoming adaptations from Sony and PlayStation Productions is the HBO series Last of Us, which will star Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the zombie apocalypse survivors Joel and Ellie.

A Twisted Metal series is also coming to Peacock. Based on the vehicular combat video games, the show will feature performances from Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Neve Campbell, and Thomas Haden Church.

Also in the pipeline is a Ghost of Tsushima movie from John Wick director Chad Stahelski.

Outside of Sony, other video game adaptations in development include Amazon’s Fallout series; Netflix’s Bioshock movie, and a rumored Mass Effect series at Amazon.
