The upcoming Star Trek: Picard season 3 might not be the show’s final installment.
Will there be a season 4 of Star Trek: Picard?
In February 2022, it was confirmed that Picard season 3 would be the show’s swan song. But almost a year later, series co-creator Alex Kurtzman said that the hit sci-fi series could actually continue.
“When we started the series, Patrick [Stewart] and we all talked about really wanting it to just be three years, feeling like we could really tell a complete story with the season you’re now seeing as our endpoint,” Kurtzman told reporters at the Television Critics Association (TCA) winter press tour in January 2023. “That being said, anything is possible. If a show blows the doors off the place, as we’re certainly hoping it will, and we’re very, very proud of season 3, who knows?”
Stewart, who plays the show’s titular character, Jean-Luc Picard, is also open to reprising his role for a potential season 4.
“If we can maintain the work that we did on seasons 1, 2, and 3 of Picard, then absolutely, yes,” Stewart said at the TCA press tour. “Because there is still enormous potential for narrative in what we’ve been doing, and there are doors left open, still. We didn’t close all of them.”
Why is there no season 4 of Picard?
Despite Kurtzman and Stewart’s recent comments about a potential Picard season 4, the show has yet to be renewed for another season, so the series continuing beyond season 3 is not set in stone, at least for the time being.
But why was it announced that Picard is ending with season 3 in the first place? The exact reason for that is unclear, but it is believed that a big part of that decision came from Stewart, as many of the show’s executive producers suggested in the past that the future of the series largely depends on its lead star.
“I mean, I think we have discussed it as both a three-season show, a five-season show, [and] a ‘let’s just keep going forever’ show… But… Star Trek: Picard in my view will go as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it,” series co-creator and executive producer Akiva Goldsman told Collider back in May 2020. “[And] as I’m sure you know, he was not interested in coming back. And we did a lot of… really good collaborative story breaking and talking and you know and I think he’s particularly delighted in a good way about having come back. And we will rely on that goodwill until he feels he’s done.”
Is Picard season 3 the last season?
As of this writing, Picard season 3 is still the last installment of the series. But given the recent comments by Kurtzman and Stewart about the possibility of the show going forward beyond season 3, it won’t be surprising if CBS reverses its decision and picks up the series for a season 4.
Has Star Trek: Picard been cancelled?
Picard was technically canceled in February 2022 when it was confirmed that its upcoming season 3 will be its last. But as mentioned above, there are talks about the series going beyond season 3, so there’s a strong chance that the show will return for a season 4.
