MediaTek has unveiled the latest addition to its Dimensity lineup of chipsets to provide 5G smartphones, PCs, routers, and mobile hotspots with higher speeds and greater performance.
The company claims its new Dimensity 1080 5G chipset will improve performance and support better camera features than the Dimensity 920 chipset that preceded it.
The Dimensity 1080 5G chipset is supposed to be capable of supporting cameras of up to 200MP. The chipset features an Imagiq signal processor (ISP) and the latest camera features to enable devices with the chip to capture detailed photos, support great noise reduction, and shoot and stream hardware-accelerated 4K HDR footage in all lighting conditions.
The Dimensity 1080 5G chipset comes with two Arm Cortex-A78 Octa-core CPUs that can perform at up to 2.6GHz, a power-optimized Arm Mali-G68 GPU, and next-gen LPDDR5 memory & UFS 3.1 storage.
These combine to produce better performance for mobile gamers, streamers, or users who want an improved browsing experience.
On the other hand, MediaTek says the chip will provide improved power-saving thanks to the 6nm design and integrated AI processing unit 3.0 (APU 3.0), allowing device manufacturers to create slim and light smartphones without sacrificing performance.
The Dimensity 1080 5G chipset supports sub-6GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, Bluetooth, and GNSS, all of which are built into the chip.
Finally, the chipset supports displays with fast refresh rates up to Full HD+ 120Hz to provide a smoother display experience without sacrificing battery life.
MediaTek Dimensity 1080 availability
MediaTek says that smartphones running on the Dimensity 1080 5G chipset should be available in Q4 of 2022.
