It’s official: Hugh Jackman is reprising his role as Wolverine in the upcoming Marvel movie Deadpool 3.
The exciting news was revealed earlier this week in a video uploaded on Ryan Reynolds’ YouTube channel and other social media accounts.
The less-than-two-minute clip opens with Reynolds, the main star of the Deadpool franchise, expressing his regret for being absent at the recently concluded D23 Expo. Soon after that, the actor gives fans an update on Deadpool 3, which was first announced to be in development back in December 2019.
“We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for, uh, a good long while now,” says Reynolds who is seated on a couch in his home. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character; find new depth and motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside… And I… I have nothing. Yeah…. Just… completely… empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”
At that moment, Jackman suddenly appears in the frame, casually passing across the room behind Reynolds. “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks Jackman. And without giving a second thought, the Oscar-nominated actor replies, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”
Watch Reynolds’ low-key yet funny reaction to Jackman’s reply in the video below:
Jackman’s Wolverine died at the end of the 2017 movie Logan, so a lot of fans were surprised that the actor is reprising his X-Men role in Deadpool 3. But in a follow-up video, Reynolds explained why Jackman’s Wolverine is alive in the next Deadpool movie.
“Logan takes place in 2029,” says Reynolds in his most recent video with Jackman. “[It’s a] totally separate thing. Logan died in Logan. [We’re] not touching that.”
What will Deadpool 3 be about?
Plot details about the movie are being kept under wraps, but the film may be based on one of the many stories featuring both Deadpool and Wolverine in the comics. Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) is set to direct the film from a script by Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
Will Deadpool 3 be rated R?
Like the first two Deadpool movies, Deadpool 3 is going to be rated R. This was confirmed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in an interview with Collider in January 2021.
When does Deadpool 3 come out?
As revealed in the video announcing Jackman’s involvement in Deadpool 3, the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6th, 2024.
