Paramount+ has revealed new details about the first-ever Baby Shark movie.
The streaming service announced last week that the feature-length animated film has the working title Baby Shark’s Big Movie! and will follow Baby Shark and his family as they move to the big city of sharks called Chomp City.
Baby Shark movie plot
In Baby Shark’s Big Movie!, Baby Shark is forced to leave the world he loves behind after his family’s move to the big city, and must adjust to his new life without his best friend, William. When Baby Shark encounters an evil pop starfish named Stariana who plans to steal his gift of song in order to dominate all underwater music, he must break her spell to restore harmony to the seas.
Baby Shark movie cast
The cast of Baby Shark’s Big Movie! has yet to be officially announced, but the actors who voice the characters in the Emmy-nominated preschool series Baby Shark’s Big Show! are likely to reprise their roles in the film.
The show, which launched globally in 2021 across Nickelodeon branded channels and platforms and currently ranks as the #1 preschool series on all TV in the U.S. for the second quarter of 2022, features the voices of Kimiko Glenn (Orange Is the New Black) as Baby Shark, Luke Youngblood (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) as William, Natasha Rothwell (Insecure) as Mommy Shark, Eric Edelstein (We Bare Bears) as Daddy Shark, Debra Wilson (MADtv) as Grandma Shark, and Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld) as Grandpa Shark.
The series is currently in its second season and airs on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and on EBS 1 in South Korea.
Baby Shark movie release date
Baby Shark’s Big Movie! doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it is set to premiere sometime in holiday 2023 in the U.S.
The team behind the Baby Shark movie
First announced to be in development in July 2021, Baby Shark’s Big Movie! is co-produced by Nickelodeon Animation and The Pinkfong Company, the kids’ entertainment brand that made the Baby Shark song a pop culture phenomenon.
Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Award-winner Alan Foreman (The Casagrandes, Welcome to the Wayne) will direct the film, with Eryk Casemiro ― executive vice president, Nickelodeon Animation, global series content ― overseeing the project’s production.
“It all started with a great song and grew from there,” Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito said of the Baby Shark franchise in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last July 2021. “It’s so exciting that we get to build on that success with a huge event [in the feature film], which we’re just starting to talk about.”
Pinkfong USA CEO Bin Jeong also told THR at the time that they were looking forward to further expanding the Baby Shark universe with the movie. “We’re super excited to introduce Baby Shark’s very first movie with Nickelodeon,” said Jeong. “It will be an opportunity for us to introduce new events in Baby Shark’s life that haven’t been explored before. It will still be within the core world, but it’s an opportunity for us to see what else we can do.”
