An apocalypse looms after magic came back stronger than ever

Syfy has just dropped the first full trailer for the fifth season of The Magicians, and by the looks of it, fans are in for another crazy, wild ride.

In the nearly two-minute video, Julia (Stella Maeve), Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley), Eliot (Hale Appleman), Margo (Summer Bishil), and Penny (Arjun Gupta) are mourning the loss of Quentin (Jason Ralph), who sacrificed his life to save his friends and restore magic to the world at the end of Season 4. But the loss of Q isn’t the only thing they’re dealing with.

They realize that magic came back stronger than ever, which appears to be an even bigger problem than not having magic at all. As a result of too much magic, “castings will be exponentially magnified [and] enchantments will malfunction,” putting the fate of Fillory and the actual world in the balance.

“In freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it, and as the excess builds, an apocalypse looms. Can the magicians get their shit together to save the world without Q?” reads the official synopsis for the new season.

As revealed at the end of the trailer, Season 5 of the Sera Gamble and John McNamara-created series is set to premiere on Wednesday, January 15th, 2020 at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy.

In addition to other returning cast members like Rick Worthy, Jade Tailor, Brittany Curran, and Trevor Einhorn, the new season will also mark the debut appearances of series newcomers Sean Maguire and Yetide Badaki.

Syfy also unveiled the first poster for Season 5, which you can see below:
