The complete Season 4 of The Boys is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The eight-episode fourth season of the superhero series premiered on June 13th and aired its finale on July 18th. If you’re one of those fans who have already finished binge-watching the latest batch of episodes, then you’re probably wondering whether the show will be back for a fifth season. The Boys Season 5 is officially happening, but a recent confirmation from series creator Eric Kripke made the show’s next season bittersweet.

‘The Boys’ Season 5 Announcement

Amazon Prime Video renewed The Boys for a fifth season on May 14th, exactly one month before its fourth-season premiere. Unfortunately for fans, the show’s next installment will be its final season.

On July 11th, two days before the premiere of The Boys Season 4, Kripke took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that that R-rated satirical drama will conclude with its fifth season.

“#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!” Kripke wrote in a post on X. His social media announcement includes a screenshot of a redacted copy of the script for the Season 4 finale, titled Assassination Run.

Why ‘The Boys’ Season 5 Is the Last

The news that The Boys would end with its fifth season was not surprising, as Kripke had previously stated in past interviews that he wanted at least five seasons to tell the story.

While chatting with Variety last June, Kripke revealed when exactly he figured out that Season 5 will be The Boys’ final installment.

“I would say near the beginning of writing Season 3, so years — years and years,” he explained to the news outlet, pointing out that it “took a minute for Amazon to agree, it took another minute to get them to clear it in all the channels so that we could finally announce it.”

As to why Kripke let the fans know as soon as possible that Season 5 is the final season, he explained: “It’s weird for this show to say, but it’s a slightly more introspective season. We always look at it in the three-act movie way as the end of Act 2 low point before the roller coaster ride of the climax. And I just wanted people to understand where it fits into the larger piece so that they kind of get what this season is supposed to be.”

‘The Boys’ Season 5 Release Date

The Boys Season 5 doesn’t have a release date yet. But based on Kripke’s recent comments about filming, a release date in the summer or fall of 2026 seems likely for Season 5.

Kripke told Variety last month that the show’s final season will film from November 2024 until mid-2025. He also confirmed that like the first four seasons of the show, Season 5 will have eight episodes.

“It’s not totally locked in yet but we are going to start shooting around mid-November. And I don’t know when it’ll premiere yet, but we’ll be shooting well into middle of ’25,” Kripke told Variety.

The Future of ‘The Boys’ franchise

Despite the main series ending soon, the ‘The Boys’ universe will continue to expand. The spinoff series Gen V has already been renewed for a second season, while a new spinoff titled The Boys: Mexico is in development. Kripke has expressed a desire to contribute to these projects in an advisory role, ensuring the integrity of the world he has so meticulously crafted.

About ‘The Boys’

Based on the bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick, The Boys follows a group of vigilantes who aim to take down corrupt superheroes called “Supes” who abuse their powers.

In Season 4, Karl Urban (Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie), Antony Starr (Homelander), Erin Moriarty (Starlight), Jessie T. Usher (A-Train), Laz Alonso (M.M.), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Tomer Capone (Frenchie), and Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko) reprised their respective roles. The latest season also introduced newcomers including Rosemarie DeWitt, Rob Benedict, Elliot Knight, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Cameron Crovetti, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

“The world is on the brink,” the synopsis for Season 4 reads. “Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office—and Butcher, who has only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The team is fed up with his lies—but with the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world.”
