Emilia Clarke’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has finally been revealed.
Clarke’s casting in the upcoming Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, was announced back in April 2021. But it was only in March 2023 that details about her character were unveiled.
Who will Emilia Clarke play in Secret Invasion?
Clarke will play the role G’iah, a Skrull radical that has issues with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) – a leader of a Skrull sect and an ally of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
Although Secret Invasion will mark Clarke’s debut appearance in the MCU, her character, G’iah, has actually appeared in the franchise before.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jackson pointed out that G’iah is actually Talos’ daughter, who first appeared in the 2019 movie Captain Marvel, along with her mother, Soren. However, at that time, both characters were still unnamed.
Jackson noted that at some point in the film, Fury witnessed a reunion between Talos and his long-lost Skrull family aboard a space station orbiting Earth. “Remember when Ben was there with his wife and daughter?” Jackson told the magazine. “She’s [G’iah] the little Skrull girl grown up. She’s his daughter.”
Secret Invasion will show how the constant war the Skrulls always find themselves in has built G’iah’s character over the years, and how her experience of living in the shadow of her powerful father has made her situation even direr.
“It’s hardened her, for sure. There’s a kind of punk feeling that you get from this girl,” the Game of Thrones alum said of her MCU character. “She’s a refugee kid who’s had Talos for a dad, you know what I mean? Maybe the fact that we didn’t know he had a kid up until this point tells you everything you need to know about their relationship.”
G’iah is not also a fan of Fury and his fellow humans. “These people promised a lot of stuff a long time ago, and not a lot has happened. So understandably, a certain amount of resentment has been built,” Clarke said of how G’iah views human beings. “There’s a lot of emotions that live within her, and there’s a lot of confrontational aspects to her character that have come from circumstance. You understand why she has the feelings that she does.”

What is Secret Invasion about?
Created by Kyle Bradstreet, Secret Invasion centers on Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

In addition to Clarke, Jackson, Freeman, Smulders, and Mendelsohn, Secret Invasion also stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, and Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes.
Dermot Mulroney is also expected to appear as United States President Ritson, while Killian Scott, Christopher McDonald, Carmen Ejogo, Charlayne Woodard, Samuel Adewunmi, and Katie Finneran have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Secret Invasion is billed as a miniseries comprised of six episodes.

The first series of Phase Five of the MCU, Secret Invasion is scheduled to premiere on June 21st, 2023.
