Folding electric scooters are everywhere these days, but they aren’t without their drawbacks and they aren’t for everyone. Razor’s EcoSmart Metro HD Electric Scooter offers an alternative to an electric folding scooter or an ebike that requires virtually no physical exertion. Instead, it offers a super smooth ride where you all have to do is sit back and steer using its handles.
The EcoSmart Metro HD Electric Scooter is very well made. It’s composed of a tubular steel frame, a bamboo deck, 16-inch air-filled bike tires, a twist-grip hand throttle and hand brake, and a “Cargo Carrier” detachable basket. The downside to its sturdy build is that it’s very heavy. Make no mistake, weighing in at 72.89 lbs this scooter is a hell of a lot heavier than even the heaviest of folding electric scooters, and it’s also much heavier than most bikes. We struggled to carry it up the stairs, and it really wasn’t a one-person job. On the plus side, it is able to carry a passenger who weighs up to 220lbs.
When it comes to comfort, its wide bamboo deck allows for much more foot room than a traditional kick scooter which in turn means you can sit positioned quite comfortably on the scooter. Razor describes the EcoSmart Metro HD’s seat as being soft and padded, but we tend to disagree. It’s definitely wide, but it’s actually quite hard, and our bottom quickly became uncomfortable while sitting. Alternatively, you can stand while riding on the scooter.
The Razor EcoSmart Metro HD is an update to the Razor EcoSmart Metro. It comes equipped with a “maintenance free” hub-driven motor that runs nearly silently. Its high torque, 350-watt motor can go as fast as 15.5 mph (25 km/h) with a range of up to 12 miles (19 km) and a runtime of up to 60 minutes of continuous use. Its rear-wheel-drive shifts weight to the rear and helps with traction and steering. The result is a super smooth ride, easy to steer ride, that is also extremely quiet.
Bottom line
We’re a bit miffed by the lack of reflectors or the inclusion of a break light with the EcoSmart Metro HD Electric Scooter. We also think that having the power on/off switch located at the bottom of the scooter is pretty inconvenient. Its heavy body is also something to take into consideration.
With all of that said, there’s no question that the EcoSmart Metro HD Electric Scooter offers a super smooth and fun ride. We do feel that its use case is somewhat limited since it doesn’t offer any real health benefits in the form of a workout. However, we envision it to be especially appealing to persons with disabilities or anyone who wants a fun way to get around town that involves extremely minimal effort.
