A new Star Trek movie is in development at Paramount.
What is the new Star Trek film about?
The plot details of the new Star Trek movie are being kept under wraps but it is set decades before the events of J.J. Abrams‘ 2009 film Star Trek, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new film is helmed by Toby Haynes, who directed six episodes of the first season of Star Trek: Andor.
Seth Grahame-Smith is writing the new Stark Trek flick and will be produced by Abrams’ Bad Robot, which describes the feature as an expansion of its Star Trek cinematic universe.
Is the new Star Trek movie different from Star Trek 4?
Although the new Star Trek feature is part of Abrams’ Star Trek movies set in the Kelvin Timeline, The Hollywood Reporter noted that it’s not the previously announced Star Trek 4, which is still being developed separately.
What is Star Trek 4 about?
Star Trek 4 is intended to be the 14th film in the Star Trek film franchise and the fourth of the franchise’s reboot films, which stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, along with Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, John Cho and the late Anton Yelchin. Star Trek 4 will feature that cast and described as the final chapter for this crew.

There have been various iterations of the film in development since 2015. Before the 2016 release of the Star Trek Beyond, it was revealed that J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay were writing the movie. In December 2017, Quentin Tarantino pitched a new idea for the next Star Trek film to Abrams, and development for that project started separately from the Beyond sequel. S. J. Clarkson was tapped to direct the latter in April 2018, but negotiations with Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth ended that August, with the actors eventually leaving the project.
In November 2019, Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a new version of the franchise. In January 2020, Tarantino revealed that he had decided not to direct his Star Trek film, and in August of that year, Hawley’s version was placed on hold by new Paramount executives, who ultimately chose not to continue with Hawley’s version.
Fast-forward to March 2021, Kalinda Vazquez was tapped to write the script for a new Star Trek film before Matt Shakman was hired to direct another version of the movie, penned by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, that July. Shakman’s movie was given a 2023 release date, and negotiations for the return of the reboot series main cast started in February 2022. However, due to a schedule conflict, Shakman left the project that August. Although Paramount started searching for a new director soon after, the film was eventually removed from the studio’s release schedule.
