Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have a surprising crossover of sorts.
TV critic Alex McLevy took to Twitter last week to share a photo of a 2022 Buffy the Vampire Slayer calendar that includes a very special guest star. Much to the confusion of fans, the calendar in question features a photo of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor from Doctor Who, alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy and other Sunnydale residents, like Nicholas Brendon’s Xander Harris, Alyson Hannigan’s Willow Rosenberg, and Anthony Head’s Rupert Giles.
“I’d like to thank the makers of the 2022 BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER calendar for obviously being devoted, passionate fans of the show who can readily identify all the most iconic characters,” McLevy sarcastically captioned the pic.

The presence of Smith’s Eleventh Doctor isn’t the only thing that’s odd in the calendar, as the monstrous villain in the image’s background is also not a character from the Buffy franchise. It’s actually a Daemon, a race of powerful humanoids first featured in season 8 of Doctor Who, which starred John Pertwee as the Third Doctor.
It turns out that the original image used in the calendar is a piece of mash-up fan art created by English artist Andy Lambert. In a comment on McLevy’s tweet, Lambert wrote, “This was a fan art I made when Matt Smith was still the Doctor which show how old it is, it was made for a fun and was part of a series of Dr Who crossovers. I stopped doing Dr Who art because of shit like this – I didn’t do it to line someone else’s pockets.”
Whoever is behind the calendar is clearly not a fan of Doctor Who and Buffy, as they cannot tell an official photo from a fan art. But despite the amusing error, some people are actually interested in getting the calendar, probably as a gag for their fellow fans.
