Fans of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe were thrilled when some of the most beloved characters from the Joss Whedon-created supernatural property returned for the audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. But now that the first season has concluded, a chilling question hangs in the air: will there be a season 2, or is this exciting saga destined to be a one-shot adventure?

What is Slayers: A Buffyverse Story about?

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is a nine-episode audio series that debuted on Audible on October 12, 2023. The series brought back many fan-favorites from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Below is the official synopsis for the audio series:

“A decade has passed since the epic final battle that concluded Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV). The game-changing spell that gave power to all potential Slayers persists. With new Slayers constantly emerging, things are looking grim for the bad guys. Rebellious vampire Spike (James Marsters) is working undercover in Los Angeles with his old pal Clem (James Charles Leary) when he meets feisty, rookie Slayer, Indira (Laya DeLeon Hayes), who wants Spike to be her mentor. Stakes intensify as Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) emerges from an alternate reality where she alone is the Slayer, and Buffy Summers doesn’t exist. Cordelia enlists Spike’s help with a classic big bad terrorizing her world… his ex, Drusilla (Juliet Landau). Giles (Anthony Head), Anya (Emma Caulfield Ford), Jonathan (Danny Strong), and Tara (Amber Benson) also return, but through the years and the vastness of the multiverse, not everyone is who they used to be…”

Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is written by Christopher Golden with Amber Benson and directed by Benson, Golden, and Kc Wayland.

Has Slayers: A Buffyverse Story been renewed for a season 2?

Despite great success on Audible and previous talks of a second season, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is not returning for another season.

Earlier this week, Christopher Golden took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the fate of the audio series.

“Hugely disappointed to share that, despite its enormous success, Disney has refused to allow Audible to proceed with future seasons of SLAYERS: A BUFFYVERSE STORY. To my knowledge, they have provided no explanation,” Golden wrote on the social networking site. “Working with this cast, the production team, and the folks at Audible UK–and seeing the joy in the fan community–has been one of the happiest experiences of my career. I’m sorry we won’t be able to continue on, but I’m so glad we were able to bring these characters back to you.”

What could have happened if Slayers: A Buffyverse Story had a season 2?

Before Slayers: A Buffyverse Story was officially canceled, actress Emma Caulfield told ComicBook.com in December 2023 that the cast and crew were all hoping for a season 2, but they knew that it’s not for them to decide.

“We’re all for it. It’s not up to us. Everybody wants to, oh yeah,” Caulfield told the website. “We were clamoring for it while we were still doing the first one. And I’ve said this before: I really feel like any of the Anyas need to have secret journals that have, like, Taylor Swift poems and lyrics and need to sing about it. It’s about the only thing I didn’t do this time around. I’m like, ‘I need to bust some.'”

When asked if she had heard some season 2 ideas from Amber Benson, Caulfield replied. “Oh yeah, lots of them.”
