Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed last January that Deadpool 3 will be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Though that movie won’t be hitting theaters anytime soon, fans can now get a pretty good idea of what Deadpool may actually look like in the MCU through a new promotional video for Ryan Reynold’s upcoming film Free Guy.
Uploaded on Reynold’s official YouTube Channel earlier this week, the four-minute clip features Deadpool reacting to the Free Guy trailer with Korg from 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok as his guest reactor. In the hilarious video, Deadpool and Korg are both in character. Deadpool is snide and sarcastic, while Korg is slow on the uptake.
Though the video isn’t exactly an MCU Canon, the video is technically Deadpool’s first appearance under the Disney banner. That, however, doesn’t stop the Merc with a Mouth from making fun of Disney and its acquisition of Fox, which is actually the reason why Free Guy is getting this unique brand cooperation between Disney and 20th Century Studios as part of its promotion. For instance, Deadpool bluntly says in the video that Korg wasn’t his first choice as guest reactor, “but apparently, everyone else was too busy over on Disney+.”
The Merc with a Mouth also calls out Deadpool 2 for fridging a character. When Korg asks what fridging is, Deadpool responds: “Well, it’s the practice of killing off or hurting a female character in order to motivate or torture the main character, also known as Deadpool 2.”
Deadpool also takes shots at Reynolds, suggesting that Free Guy is one of the reasons why Deadpool 3 hasn’t started filming yet. “This looks fun,” Deadpool says of Free Guy after watching the trailer. “Not sure if it was worth diverting Canadian Cumberbatch’s little mind away from my next movie.”
At the end of the video, Deadpool even asks Korg for tips on how he can get into the MCU. But when Deadpool finds Korg’s answer rather useless, the former casually reveals that he prefers Thor: Dark World over Thor: Ragnarok, where Korg made his debut appearance.
While Deadpool and Korg have great comedic chemistry, Korg’s inclusion in the video wasn’t a random decision, as Taika Waititi, who voices Korg in the MCU, actually plays the villainous role of Antoine in Free Guy.
Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Matt Lieberman, Free Guy centers on a teller named Guy (Reynolds) who works at a bank that always gets robbed. Guy soon discovers that he’s not real, but just a non-playable background character in a violent open-world video game called Free City. When Guy finds out that the Grand Theft Auto-like video game is about to be discontinued, he steps up and tries to save his world.
Free Guy, which also stars Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rey Howery, and Utkarsh Ambudkar, opens in U.S. theaters on August 13th.
