The Flash final season premiered last week. And since this is the show’s swan song, the superhero series is bringing back key characters from the previous seasons to wrap up Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) story on a high note.

The Flash season 9 premiere, titled Wednesday Ever After, brought back the characters of Joseph Monteleone, a.k.a. Tar Pit (Josh Chambers), in a dream sequence, as well as the character of Sue Dearbon (Natalie Dreyfuss) in a video call with Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton).

In the second episode, titled Hear No Evil, Hartley Rathaway, a.k.a. Pied Piper (Andy Mientus), made a comeback, along with recurring character Mark Blaine, a.k.a. Chillblaine (Jon Cor), who is now part of the main characters. But who else is coming back for The Flash season 9?

Major characters returning for The Flash final season

While it’s too early to speculate what will go down in the final season, showrunner Eric Wallace previously confirmed a number of major characters coming back for the rest of the season. And these characters are as follows:

Wally West

Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West / Kid Flash

Keiynan Lonsdale will reprise his role as Wally West, a.k.a. Kid Flash, in The Flash final season. In a statement to TVLine in January 2023, showrunner Eric Wallace said that they wrote a special story for the character’s return.

“Kid Flash isn’t just another speedster — he’s a beloved part of our Team Flash family,” Wallace said. “So as soon as we knew he was coming back, we set out to create a special and heartfelt story for his return. The result is a brilliant performance from Keiynan that showcases a side of Wally West you’ve never seen before.”

John Diggle

In the same statement to TVLine last January, Wallace also confirmed David Ramsey’s return as John Diggle in The Flash final season.

“As one of the legacy Arrowverse characters who helped start it all, John Diggle holds a special place in our hearts, as well as the fans’,” Wallace said in a statement. “Plus, the commanding presence and commitment to excellence actor/director David Ramsey brings to the screen each and every time is truly inspiring. So, of course, it was a no-brainer to have Diggle join Team Flash in our final season! So, get ready for a very emotional reunion as John Diggle aka Spartan helps protect Central City alongside Team Flash one, last time.”

Ramsey Rosso

Last seen in season 6 when Eva McCulloch’s (Efrat Dor) Mirrorverse minions tracked him down in his ARGUS containment cell to claim a drop of his blood, Bloodwork, a.k.a. Ramsey Rosso (Sendhil Ramamurthy), is also set to come back for The Flash final season.

“Ever since Sendhil turned in such a brilliantly haunting and unforgettable performance as the tortured Ramsey Rosso in season 6, we’ve been looking for a way to bring him back,” said Wallace. “We also knew we wanted to have Ramsey play a part in Flash’s final race. Fortunately, everything came together and now the villainous Bloodwork’s return will set into motion one of the Flash’s wildest and most emotional adventures yet.”

Oliver Queen

Wally West, John Diggle, and Bloodwork will reportedly appear in episode 9 of The Flash final season with none other than Oliver Queen, a.k.a. the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell).

“As soon as our final season was announced, we knew we wanted Stephen to come back and reprise his iconic role as Oliver Queen,” Wallace said in a statement in January. “After all, it was Oliver who originally launched Barry Allen on his heroic path. That’s why everyone on Team Flash felt so strongly that it was important to create a full-circle moment with Oliver’s return in the final season of The Flash.”

In January, Ramsey took to Instagram to share a set photo from the said episode. The picture, which you can see below, features him, Amell, Gustin, and Lonsdale in their respective superhero suits.

Eddie Thawne

Earlier this February, Entertainment Weekly exclusively revealed that Rick Cosnett will be part of The Flash final season. Although Cosnett’s character, Eddie Thawne, died at the end of the first season, the actor is expected to play the same role for season 9, just like he did for season 2, season 3, and season 8.

“We’re so excited to have Rick join us once more as we put together our final batch of emotional and thrilling episodes,” showrunner Eric Wallace told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s especially wonderful as Rick was an integral part of the show’s inaugural season. So having him return to help us conclude our show’s incredible nine-year run was more than a privilege. It was a no-brainer.”

Eobard Thawne

Matt Letscher as Eobard Thawne / The Reverse Flash

Wallace confirmed that Matt Letscher will also appear in The Flash final season. Letscher has appeared as different versions of Eobard Thawne and the Reverse-Flash in The Flash and other Arrowverse series like Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. While it’s unclear what version of the character he is going to play in The Flash season 9, Wallace teased that his appearance will delight fans.

“Having the incredibly gracious and talented Matt Letscher return for our final season was something we couldn’t resist,” said Wallace. “So, we created a very special story for him, one we’ve been excited to tell for a while, but couldn’t until now. The result is a wild and bittersweet episode we hope fans — both old and new — will love.”

Nora West-Allen

Jessica Parker Kennedy is confirmed to reprise her role as Nora West-Allen, a.k.a. XS, in The Flash final season. Nora made her Arrowverse debut during the Crisis on Earth-X crossover in 2017, and has appeared sporadically on The Flash since then.

The Flash has always been a show about the importance of family,” Wallace said. “So having the incredible Jessica Parker Kennedy back as fan-favorite speedster XS was always in the cards. As the daughter of Barry and Iris, Jessica’s already made an unforgettable mark on our show’s history. And with her latest season 9 adventure, Jessica’s taking her incredible portrayal of Nora West-Allen to even greater heights in a way the audience has never seen before.”

Ryan Wilder

Javicia Leslie, who appeared as Ryan Wilder, a.k.a. Batwoman, in two episodes of The Flash season 8, will also be coming back for the show’s last season. But in addition to playing the Gotham City hero, Leslie will also be portraying a new character called Red Death.

Set photos taken by Candagraphs revealed that John Wesley Shipp and Michelle Harrison will also be back for The Flash final season. But instead of than playing Jay Garrick and Joan Williams, the duo will be back as Barry’s parents, Henry Allena and Nora Allen.

Keith Kanyon and Jaco Bich

Both Keith Kanyon, a.k.a. Goldface (Damion Poitier), and Jaco Birch a.k.a. The Hotness are also confirmed to return for The Flash final season. Both villains were last seen in season 8 of The Flash.
