The release date for Beetlejuice 2 has finally been set.

Beetlejuice 2 release date

On Tuesday, May 9th, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that Beetlejuice 2 will open in theaters on September 6th, 2024. It will go head-to-head with the Marvel movie Blade, which is also scheduled to open in cinemas on the same day.

Aside from Blade, which stars Mahershala Ali in the titular role, there are not many big movies currently set to be released in the surrounding weeks. While it’s hard to predict if Beetlejuice 2 will manage to outperform Blade at the box office, Warner Bros. has had blockbuster horror movies over Labor Day weekend in the past. These films include 2017’s It, its 2019 sequel It Chapter 2, and the 2018 movie The Nun.

The news about Beetlejuice 2 release date comes one year and three months after it was reported in February 2022 that Plan B Entertainment, the production company owned by Brad Pitt, is producing the sequel.

Danny Elfman, the composer behind the original Beetlejuice movie, is also confirmed to compose the score for the sequel.

What is the original Beetlejuice about?

In the 1988 movie, a recently deceased married couple is impossibly irked by the new family that moved into their home. As ghosts, the pair contact Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a devious ghost from the Netherworld, who promises to help them haunt the house’s new inhabitants. The deceased married couple are played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, while the new inhabitants of their home are portrayed by Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O’Hara as husband and wife, and Winona Ryder as their daughter.

Beetlejuice was a critical and commercial success, earning $73 million at the domestic box office from a budget of just $15 million. It won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and three Saturn Awards: Best Horror Film, Best Makeup, and Best Supporting Actress for Sylvia Sidney. The film’s success spawned an animated TV series, video games, and a 2018 stage musical.
