The fate of the British submarine drama Vigil has finally been revealed.
In an interview in the latest issue of Radio Times magazine, BBC’s Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore announced that the broadcaster has renewed Vigil for a season 2.
Vigil season 2 plot
Launched in August 2021, the six-episode season 1 of Vigil followed Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) of the Scottish Police Service, who was sent to HMS Vigil, a nuclear-powered Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarine, to investigate a death on board, which took place shortly after the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler.
Though Silva’s investigations and those of her colleagues ashore brought the police into conflict with the Royal Navy and MI5, the mystery surrounding the onboard death was ultimately solved at the end of the show’s freshman run, so it’s not yet clear what exactly is in store for Silva next season. Despite this, season 2 of the Tom Edge-created show is sure to tell another tense and thrilling tale, set and filmed in Scotland.
Vigil season 2 cast
Since plot details for season 2 are being kept under wraps, it’s hard to pinpoint which stars are returning for the new season. However, it’s safe to assume that Rose Leslie will be re-joining Jones for season 2. In season 1, Leslie played Kirsten Longacre, Silva’s fellow police officer and former love interest with whom she resumed a relationship at the end of the first season.
Other cast members that may return for season 2 include Shaun Evans as Elliot Glover, the coxswain of HMS Vigil; Martin Compston as Craig Burke, a sonar mapping expert on HMS Vigil; Paterson Joseph as Commander Neil Newsome, the Captain of HMS Vigil; and Adam James as Mark Prentice, the Executive Officer of HMS Vigil.
Vigil season 2 release date
Vigil season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. But since the first season ran from August to September 2021 on BBC One, it’s likely that the show’s sophomore run will premiere during that same period later this year.
Where to watch Vigil season 2
Fans in the U.K. will be able to watch Vigil season 2 on BBC One. Fans in the U.S., meanwhile, will likely wait for quite some time before it becomes available to stream on Peacock or air on USA Network.
