What is Yellowstone about?
Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, which is the largest ranch in Montana. The series stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton, a sixth-generation homesteader and the devoted patriarch of the family, who operates in a corrupt world where politicians are compromised by influential oil and lumber corporations and land grabs make developers billions. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect, the titular massive ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders — an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.
In addition to Costner, Yellowstone also stars Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White, Danny Houston, Gil Birmingham, Ian Bohen, Kelly Reilly, and many more.
Has Yellowstone been canceled?
Yes, Yellowstone has been canceled. On May 5th, 2023, Paramount Network announced that the upcoming fifth-season finale will also serve as the series finale.
Why was Yellowstone canceled?
Paramount Network didn’t provide a reason for Yellowstone’s cancellation. But in February 2022, Deadline reported that Paramount Network was considering wrapping up the series with season 5 due to disagreements over shooting schedules. Sources told the news outlet at the time that series lead star Kevin Costner, who had originally limited himself to 65 days of shooting on Yellowstone season 5, only wanted to shoot for 50 days for the first part of the current season. But for the season’s second batch of episodes, the Oscar and Emmy winner only wanted to spend a week shooting.
Since Costner plays the main character, John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton clan, the actor’s request had reportedly been a source of frustration for series creator Taylor Sheridan and had caused morale problems for his costars.
Sources said that Paramount Network declined Costner’s proposal for shortened filming and instead made the decision to move on to a new untitled sequel series, which has been rumored to be headlined by Matthew McConaughey. It’s not exactly clear why Costner asked for a one-week shooting for the second half of Yellowstone season 5, but Deadline noted that the actor is currently directing and starring in his multi-part western epic film Horizon.
