When will The Lord of the Rings anime movie come out

Warner Bros. Pictures has set a release date for the first-ever The Lord of the Rings anime movie.

Officially titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, the anime fantasy film will open in U.S. theaters on April 12th, 2024.

Produced by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation with animation by Sola Entertainment, the Lord of the Rings anime movie is set roughly 200 years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It will explore the exploits of Helm Hammerhand, the King of Rohan, and the creation of Helm’s Deep. For those who are not familiar, Helm’s Deep is the fortified gorge used as a bastion against Sauron’s forces in the 2003 movie The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

First announced back in June 2021, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is best known for helming the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

Philippa Boyens, who was part of the Oscar-winning screenwriting team for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, is executive producing the anime movie, with Joseph Chou producing through Sola Entertainment.

Boyens’ daughter Phoebe Gittins is penning the screenplay with her writing partner Arty Papageorgiou based on a script from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. The creative team of The Lord of the Rings anime movie also includes Richard Taylor, who won Oscars for makeup and visual effects for The Lord of the Rings; Alan Lee, who took home an Oscar for art direction also for The Lord of the Rings; and renowned Tolkien illustrator John Howe.

“I’m in awe of the creative talent who have come together to bring this epic, heart-pounding story to life, from the mastery of Kenji Kamiyama to a truly stellar cast,” Boyens said in a statement to Variety.

Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich added, “The Lord of the Rings films took Tolkien’s masterwork to new cinematic heights and inspired a generation. It’s a gift to be able to revisit Middle-earth with many of the same creative visionaries and the talented Kenji Kamiyama at the helm. This will be an epic portrayal unlike anything audiences have ever seen.”

The voice cast of The Lord of the Rings anime movie has yet to be announced, and although a trailer is not expected to drop soon, Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled a piece of concept art for the film, which is reminiscent of the visual tone set by the six previous Lord of the Rings live-action movies.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is completely separate from the Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is set to premiere on September 2nd. Developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the live-action Middle-earth series is set thousands of years before the events of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
