What city has the highest murder rate

Everyone wants to live in a safe neighborhood, so it’s common for people to research about the crime rate in a particular place before relocating. Though murder is less common than most petty crimes, it can still happen anytime to anyone, anywhere. So if you’re planning to move to a city soon, a recent report revealing what city has the highest murder rate can help you decide where your next home would be.

Last month, Neighborhood Scout, a website and online database of U.S. neighborhood analytics, revealed the 30 cities in the U.S. with the highest number of murders per 1,000 residents. The research, however, was only limited to cities with 25,000 or more people.

Crime data used in the research are the most recent figures the FBI classifies as “Final, non-preliminary.” Released in September 2021 and covering the calendar year 2020, this set of information is the most up-to-date and fully vetted data with complete national coverage.

With a murder rate of .87 per 1,000 population, St. Louis, Missouri is the city with the highest murder rate in 2022. Up from the third spot on last year’s list, St. Louis reported 263 murders, which is an increase of 36% compared to last year.

In second place is Petersburg, Virginia with a murder rate of .72 per 1,000 population, followed by Flint, Michigan (.72) in the third spot; Saginaw, Michigan (.57) in the fourth place; and Pine Bluff, Arkansas (.56), securing the fifth rank.

Coming in sixth place is New Orleans, Louisiana (.52), followed by Detroit, Michigan (.52), Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (.46), Memphis, Tennessee (.46), and Wilmington, Delaware (.45).
