Mattel has started off the new year with the launch of its latest innovation called UNO Flex.
What is UNO Flex?
UNO Flex is the newest version of the UNO card game that elevates the spirited competition and wild rules that longtime fans know and love. While UNO Flex plays like regular UNO in matching numbers, colors, and symbols, the former includes new, never-before-seen Flex Cards, which have two sides that allow players to change the color or action of a card.
How to play UNO Flex
The UNO Flex deck includes a standard deck of 112 cards, including 8 Power Cards. Be the first to get rid of all your cards to win.
You play just like classic UNO by matching colors or numbers. But as mentioned above, this game includes Flex Cards, which have two colors on them so you can change the color of the card to make a match. There are also Flex Action Cards and Flex Wild Cards that add even more twists to the game.
At the start of the game, all players are given a Power Card. A Power Card is green on one side and red on the other. All players begin with their Power Cards on the green side. The visible side of your Power Card determines whether you can use the “flex” side of your cards. If the Power Card is on the green side, you can choose to use the “flex” side of your card – but once you do, you must flip your Power Card to the red side. If your Power Card is on the red side, you can no longer choose to use the “flex” side of a card in play.
To flip your Power Card back to the green side, one of the following must happen:
- You play a Number Card with a “flip” symbol on it,
- Anyone plays a Wild Flip card, or
- When every player’s Power Cards are on the red side at the same time.
Flex Cards
Each Flex Card has a “regular” area and a “flex” area. The color in the Center Oval tells you the regular area. The card is normally played as a card of this color. On the other hand, the color in the lower right corner of the card is the “flex area”. The card can be “flexed” to become a card of this color. To “flex” a card and play it, the card must have a matching color in its “flex” area and your Power Card must be on the green side.
Flex Action Cards
The regular area of these cards functions as typical UNO Action Cards, but the “flex” area has special rules.
- Flex Draw Two: Forces every other player to draw 1 card
- Flex Reverse: Acts as reverse and skip
- Flex Skip: You skip all players so the turn comes back to you
Flex Wild Cards
The regular area of these cards functions as typical UNO Wild Cards, but the “flex” area has special rules.
- Flex Wild Target Draw Two: Lets you choose the player who has to draw two cards
- Flex Wild All Draw: Every other player must draw two cards
- Flex Wild Draw Four: You choose the player who has to draw four cards
- Flex Wild All Flip Card: All players must flip over their Power Card
