A Twilight TV series is in the works: Here’s what we know

Is there a Twilight TV series?

A TV series based on the author’s best-selling book series Twilight is reportedly in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter which first broke the news, the potential series in early development at Lionsgate Television.

Lionsgate TV has reportedly tapped Sinead Daly to write the script for the Twilight TV series. Daly is best known for writing episodes for Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Dirty John, Raised by Wolves, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tell Me Lies, among many others.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s not yet clear the whether the Twilight TV series is going to be a straight adaptation of the novels or will be a spinoff of sorts that will focus on certain supporting characters from the original material. Daly is reportedly working with Lionsgate TV to determine what take they will be pursuing for the TV series.

Is Stephenie Meyer involved in the Twilight TV series?

People with knowledge of the project said that author Meyer is expected to be involved in the television treatment of her fantasy romance novels.

Wyck Godfrey and Erik Feig — the former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president who bought the rights to the Twilight book series during his tenure at Summit Entertainment — are both attached to exec produce the Twilight TV series. Godfrey’s Temple Hill banner produced all the Twilight movies that Feig’s Summit distributed.

The movie franchise, which starred Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan, Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, collectively earned more than $3.4 billion at the worldwide box office.

Where to watch the Twilight TV series

The Twilight TV series is still very much in early development, so the project does not have a TV network or a streaming home yet. Lionsgate, which controls the rights to the franchise, is reportedly planning to lead the development of the project before shopping the rights to TV networks and streaming services. There’s no timeline yet for when the Twilight TV series will be shopped around to potential buyers.

Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels chart the later teen years of Bella Swan, a girl who moves to Forks, Washington, from Phoenix, Arizona, and falls in love with a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen. As Bella and Edward’s relationship develops, they face numerous challenges, including Bella harboring feelings for Jacob Black, a friend from the local Native American tribe who has a supernatural secret of his own.

There are four main books in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series, and they are as follows:

  1. Twilight – released on October 5, 2005
  2. New Moon – released on September 6, 2006
  3. Eclipse – released on August 7, 2007
  4. Breaking Dawn – released on August 2, 2008

In addition to the four main books, Meyer also published a novella titled The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, which tells the story of a newborn vampire who appeared in Eclipse. It was published in 2010.

Why did Twilight end?

In the FAQ section of Stephenie Meyer’s official website, the author stated that she chose to end the Twilight saga after the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, because Bella Swan’s conflicts had already been resolved.

The Twilight Saga is really Bella’s story, and this was the natural place for her story to wind up,” Meyer said of where Bella is at the end of Breaking Dawn. “She overcame the major obstacles in her path and fought her way to the place she wanted to be. I suppose I could try to prolong her story unnaturally, but it wouldn’t be interesting enough to keep me writing. Stories need conflict, and the conflicts that are Bella-centric are resolved.”

How many Twilight movies are there?

There are five Twilight movies in total. Here are the titles and release dates:

Is Twilight on HBO Max?

As of April 2023, no Twilight movies are streaming on HBO Max, now called Max. The first two movies in the franchise are currently not available on any streaming sites in the United States. The last three films, meanwhile, are available for streaming on Fubo, Showtime, and DirecTV.

Other upcoming projects from Lionsgate TV

In addition to the Twilight TV series, which was announced just days after Warner Bros. Discovery greenlit a Harry Potter TV series, Lionsgate TV is also reviving Spartacus with a sequel series from creator Steven S. DeKnight. Furthermore, the studio has been exploring a sequel to the former Showtime comedy Weeds.
