Annabeth Gish, who played FBI special agent Monica Reyes in the last four seasons of The X-Files, is open to reprising her role in potential new seasons of the hit sci-fi drama.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com for her new Netflix series Midnight Mass, Gish said that she would be happy to get more opportunities to bring Agent Reyes to life. She even mentioned that her Midnight Mass costar Kristin Lehman, who also appeared in The X-Files, should join Agent Reyes for more adventures if the Chris Carter-created franchise made a comeback.

“I would always [return], even though seasons [10 and 11], the reboots, Monica Reyes was a little [absent],” said Gish. “Maybe there could be Agent Reyes and another female agent, right? Why not?”

Lehman, meanwhile, said that reprising her X-Files role could be quite complicated, as her character’s “consciousness got uploaded to artificial intelligence” during her one-episode stint on the Fox series.

In season 5, episode 11 of The X-Files, Lehman appeared as computer genius Esther Nairn, aka Invisigoth, who uploaded her consciousness into an AI that was trying to kill her. At the end of the episode, Esther’s uploaded consciousness became the AI of an old mobile home in a trailer park in North Platte, Nebraska.

Though it seems that Fox has no plans to do another season of The X-Files at the moment, Carter told Den of Geek last October that he “always thought there would be even more X-Files.” While he admitted that continuing the series with original stars David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) is unlikely, he’s hoping to continue the franchise with an animated spinoff that is currently in development at Fox.

“Being that Gillian has decided to move on with her career, we certainly couldn’t do Mulder and Scully again,” said Carter. “But that’s not to say there isn’t another way to do The X-Files. And so right now I think the future is unwritten.”

While it’s not clear whether Gish and Lehman will ever get to return to The X-Files franchise in the future, fans of the actresses can see them both in the supernatural horror series Midnight Mass, which is set to premiere on September 24th on Netflix.

Created by Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass tells the tale of a small, isolated island community whose existing divisions are amplified by the return of a disgraced young man (Zach Gilford) and the arrival of a charismatic priest (Hamish Linklater). When Father Paul’s appearance on Crockett Island coincides with unexplained and seemingly miraculous events, a renewed religious fervor takes hold of the community. Gish plays Dr. Sarah Gunning in the series, while Lehman portrays the role of Annie Flynn.
