A limited series that serves as a sequel to the 1997 movie The Full Monty is headed to Disney+.

Co-commissioned by Disney+ and FX, The Full Monty series reunites the film’s Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and producer Uberto Pasolini (Nowhere Special). The series is created and written by Beaufoy, who also executive produces the project, along with Pasolini, Simon Lewis (Three Girls), and Lee Mason, director of scripted content for Disney+.

The eight-episode series is directed by Andrew Chaplin (Alma’s Not Normal) and Catherine Morshead (No Offence) and co-written by Alice Nutter (Trust). Produced by Little Island Productions, The Full Monty series was developed by Searchlight Television and FX.

What is The Full Monty film about?

Set in Sheffield, England during the 1990s, The Full Monty movie tells the story of six unemployed men who decide to form a male striptease act à la the Chippendale dancers in order to make some money. The main character, Gaz (Robert Carlyle), declares that their show will be much better than the renowned Chippendales dancers because they will go “the full monty” or strip all the way.

What will The Full Monty series be about?

The Full Monty series will follow the original cast as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education, and employment sectors, and explore how communal effort can still triumph over adversity.

Based on a statement from Beaufoy, it seems like fans will also be meeting the families of the main characters in the sequel series. “We’re chuffed to bits to get all the Monty Men back together again — now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on — to see what life in Sheffield is like twenty-five years on,” said Beaufoy.

Who will be back for The Full Monty series?

The original cast members who are reprising their roles from the film in the sequel series include Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) as Gaz, Mark Addy (A Knight’s Tale) as Dave, Lesley Sharp (Naked) as Jean, Hugo Speer (The Interpreter) as Guy, Paul Barber (Formula 51) as Horse, Steve Huison (The Royle Family) as Lomper, Wim Snape (Genesis) as Nathan, and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) as Gerald.

The returning cast members will be joined by a new batch of actors that will play as the children and grandchildren of the Monty Men.

When will The Full Monty series come out?

The Full Monty series doesn’t have a release date yet, but filming for the sequel began on March 28th in the U.K. cities of Sheffield and Manchester.

Where will The Full Monty series be available to stream?

The Full Monty series is set to premiere on Hulu in the U.S. It will debut on Star+ in Latin America, and on Disney+ and FX in other international territories.
