A new animated film about the Justice Society of America is in the works.
New Justice Society of America film
Following the world premiere screening of the animated feature Green Lantern: Beware My Power at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) last week, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment revealed that a new Justice Society animated movie is in development. Details on the upcoming flick are being kept under wraps, but Comic Book Movie reported that the yet-to-be-titled film is a sequel to Justice Society: World War II, which was released in April 2021.
Other upcoming DC animated movies
In addition to the in-development Justice Society of America animated feature, film publicist Gary Miereanu also announced the following DC animated movies at SDCC for the first time: Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Justice League: Warworld. All three flicks will be released in 2023.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham
Warner Bros.’ Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is an animated adaptation of the three-issue DC Comics comic book mini-series of the same name that ran from 2000 to 2001.
Written by Mike Mignola and Richard E. Pace, with art by Troy Nixey, the comic book series joins fellow comic book series Superman: Red Son and Batman: Gotham by Gaslight as standalone stories to get the animated treatment from Warner Bros. Animation.
Here’s the synopsis for the comic book series Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham: “It’s Gotham City, 1928. Twenty years have passed since a madman slew the parents of young Bruce Wayne, heir to one of the city’s oldest fortunes. Twenty years since he fled the carnage of Gotham. But now Bruce Wayne has returned-and hell has followed. A terrible thing from beyond space and time has awakened. The Lurker on the Threshold has called its faithful servants-immortal sorcerers, reptile men, beings of eldritch cold and fungal horror-to feed our world into its gaping maw. If the Batman hopes to end the horror, how terrible must Bruce Wayne become?”
Legion of Super-Heroes
Information about the new Legion of Super-Heroes animated film is scarce. But this animated project is entirely different from the previously announced Legion of Super-Heroes adult-animated series that will stream on HBO Max. That series is in development with comic book creator Brian Michael Bendis, who is very familiar with the team of heroes, having written the latest volume of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the comics.
Earlier this month, Bendis took to social media to share a look at the script for the series. “LONG LIVE THE LEGION! #fingerscrossed #legionofsuperheroes #longlivethelegion #hbomax,” he wrote on Instagram, along with the first page of the Legion of Super-Heroes and four other images of various Legion members from the comics.

Justice League: Warworld
While Warner Bros. has yet to release a synopsis for the new Justice League: Warworld animated film, ComicBook.com reported that the movie will probably find the DC Universe’s greatest superheroes battling against Mongul, the ruler of a planet-sized satellite known as Warworld, who has been facing off against Superman in the comics for months now.
Justice League: Warworld will be the first Justice League movie since the launch of the Tomorrowverse, the latest iteration of DC’s interconnected, animated continuity.
The abovementioned Green Lantern: Beware My Power was officially released on July 26th. Coming out on October 18th, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is the next animated DC film from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment to be released. Meanwhile, RWBY x Justice League doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it is currently slated for 2023.
