Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won’t open in U.S. theaters until April 8th. But because the movie already made its theatrical release in several international markets last week, a number of spoilers for the sequel are now circulating online. And one of those appears to have been confirmed by a McDonald’s Happy Meal toy.
McDonald’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Happy Meal toys
The official website for McDonald’s Happy Meals in the U.S. has recently been updated with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 toys. The homepage only shows seven different toys ― two Sonics, two Tails, two Knuckles, and a Robotnik ― but there’s actually an eighth toy hiding on the website.
The photos of the toys on the website’s banner image are clickable, and once clicked, a brief video pops up showing the toy in action. As of publish time, clicking on the first Tails toy pops up a video as expected, but for a completely different toy. Instead of the Tails toy, the video features a Super Sonic toy.
Since these McDonald’s Happy Meal toys are part of the marketing campaign for the movie, the inclusion of a Super Sonic toy suggests that fans are going to see this version of Sonic in the sequel.
Who is Super Sonic?
Super Sonic is a variant of Sonic. It is described as the “super state” of the beloved Sega character, which can be activated by collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds and 50 rings. In 2D video games, Super Sonic plays like Sonic, but can jump higher, is faster, and is invincible. Nevertheless, Super Sonic could still drown, die by falling off-screen, or get crushed against a wall.
What will happen in Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
Picking up after the events of the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will open with the titular character (Ben Schwartz) trying to make his mark as a hero in Green Hills, while Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are in Hawaii for the wedding ceremony of her sister Rachel (Natasha Rothwell).
So when Sonic’s enemy Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) returns from the mushroom planet to search for the Master Emerald, conquer the world, and exact revenge against Sonic with the help of Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), Sonic must team up with his new friend Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) on a globe-trotting adventure to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.
