How to save the Amazon rainforest with Nemus NFTs

A Brazilian company is selling NFTs to preserve the Amazon rainforest

Nemus NFTs

Nemus, a Brazilian firm that owns 410 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest, is selling NFTs to help conserve, protect, and treasure specific areas of the renowned South American jungle.

What are Nemus NFTs?

Aside from being the name of the company, Nemus also refers to the firm’s collectible NFT experience that grants buyers unique sponsorship of different sized tracts of the Amazon rainforest. The proceeds of the NFT sale are used to preserve the trees in the jungle, regenerate clear-cut areas, and support sustainable development efforts such as harvesting acai berries and Brazil nuts by local communities in the municipality of Pauini in Amazonas state.

Each Nemus NFT comes with artwork of a fauna or flora species that can be found on the actual land that the company has promised to conserve. For the first-ever Nemus NFT drop called Genesis, Los Angeles-based graphic artist Ben Kwok designed the rarest 8 features in the deck, while San Francisco-based Concept Art House created the remaining 84 features. You can see some of the Nemus NFTs from the Genesis drop below:

In an interview with Reuters, Nemus founder Flavio de Meira Penna made it clear that Nemus NFT holders will not own the land itself, but will have access to key information about its preservation, from satellite imagery to licensing and other documentation.

Officially launched on March 25th, Nemus had sold 10% of an initial offer of Nemus NFTs for 8,000 hectares on the first day. “My guess is this will accelerate rapidly in coming weeks,” Penna told the news agency.

How much are Nemus NFTs?

The price of a Nemus NFT depends on the size of land available for sponsorship. Viewable by buyers on online maps, these plots of land range from a quarter of a hectare to 81 hectares. According to Penna, Nemus NFTs for the smallest plots sell for $150 and the largest fetch $51,000.

Penna said the Nemus is hoping to raise $4 million to $5 million to purchase an additional 2 million hectares of land, which are already under negotiations in Pauini.
