Xiaomi has launched their second generation foldable phone, the MIX Fold 2, and it’s cheaper, slimmer, and bigger than Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Z Fold 4, effectively making it a great Galaxy Z Fold 4 alternative – but there’s a catch.
Xiaomi’s Micro Waterdrop Hinge: A breakthrough for foldable phones?
The MIX Fold 2 features an ultra-slim design and it measures 11.2mm thick when folded and just 5.4mm when unfolded. Xiaomi claims that the MIX Fold 2 is thinner than many of its competitors and attributes this achievement to the “micro waterdrop hinge” that it created in-house.
Due to its smaller bending radius, thin screen modules, customized mini rotating hinge, and carbon fiber double-wing floating panel, the micro waterdrop hinge enables Xiaomi to achieve the level of thinness and portability it has.
Not to mention the space stacking technology, and the use of the hidden spaces on both sides of the hinge for soft boards, effectively improving space utilization by 20%.
Displays
Two independent Samsung 2160×1914 resolution, 120Hz AMOLED panels with a combined size of 8.02-inches make up the device’s folding screen. These displays have a POL-LESS ultra-thin color filter to lessen reflection and increase the light transmittance by 33%. yet the MIX Fold 2 manages to consume 25% less power.
A 6.56-inch 2520×1080 resolution, 120Hz Samsung display, is mounted externally on the smartphone. This screen can achieve brightness levels of up to 1000 nits and also includes a P3 color gamut.
Camera
Leica and Xiaomi collaborated to create the MIX Fold 2’s camera technology. The foldable has a 50MP wide-angle camera, a 13MP ultra-wide angle camera, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 20MP selfie camera on the rear. All these cameras use Leica-certified Summicron lenses and utilize Xiaomi’s ProFocus technology, which makes image capturing and shooting videos a faster and more accurate exercise.
The MIX Fold 2 has two photography styles, the Leica Authentic Look and Leica Vibrant Look, that could give photographers added creative freedom. The device can record videos in Dolby Vision HDR.
Software
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 runs on the MIUI Fold 13 OS and was launched alongside the MIX Fold 2. The operating system is a modified version of the standard MIUI interface.
According to Xiaomi, the company is committed to ensuring that third-party applications are modified to support the larger screen to ensure visual consistency is maintained so that customers can enjoy an advanced user experience on both the outer and inner screens.
Performance
The MIX Fold 2 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. The smartphone has a 4,500mAh battery that supports 67W wired turbocharging.
Pricing and Availability
The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 will be available in Mainland China starting August 16th on Xiaomi’s website. It comes in two colors: Black and Gold, with three storage variants: 12GB+256GB – priced at $1334.61, 12GB+512GB – priced at $1482.92 and 12GB+1TB – priced at $1735.04.
It’s worth noting, that the MIX Fold 2’s pricing is more competitive than the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. Unfortunately, unlike Samsung’s foldable, the catch is that the Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 will likely never become available in the U.S.
Redmi K50 Ultra
In addition to the MIX Fold 2, Xiaomi also announced the Redmi K50 Ultra which is also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform, and it boasts a 100MP main camera, a 5,000mAh battery, and 120W HyperCharge technology, which enables you to charge your device to 100% in just 19 minutes.
The Redmi K50 Ultra Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team Summer Edition, which incorporates the team’s distinctive silver, petroleum green lines, and carbon fiber textures into the design, is undeniably the most beautiful color option for the K50 Ulta.
