If you are a Cash App user and you have been keeping an eye on your phone notifications, you might want to check your balances for a juicy payout. Cash App is officially rolling out payments from its massive $15 million class-action data breach settlement.
The payouts stem from a high-profile legal battle following a 2021 security breach that impacted millions of users. While the headline-grabbing fund totals $15 million, the money is finally moving out to approved claimants after clearing a rigorous review process.
It is important to note that not all Cash App users are eligible for this payout. However, here are some things you need to know to determine your eligibility under this settlement.
Where did the $15 million come from?
The financial payout resolves claims tied to past security incidents and data exposure that left users worried about their account safety. Back in late 2021, an unauthorized former employee downloaded reports containing sensitive customer data from Cash App.
The resulting class-action lawsuit argued that parent company Block did not do enough to protect user accounts. Even though Block denied any wrongdoing, the company agreed to create the $15 million settlement fund to put the legal headache in its rearview mirror.
Who is getting paid out right now?
Before you rush to open your app looking for a surprise windfall, there’s an important catch: eligibility extends to Cash App users who were victims of fraudulent withdrawals or transfers at any point from Aug. 23, 2018, through Aug. 20, 2024.
The window to file a claim closed back on Nov. 18, 2024, and you are not eligible for this settlement if you did not file your claim before that day.
Even if you submitted your claim before the deadline, you don’t qualify automatically. This is because out of hundreds of thousands of initial submissions, only roughly 40,380 claims successfully cleared the strict review process. Those who made the final cut did so by providing documentation of direct financial losses or account issues tied to the breach. You have to be among these approved claimants to receive funds in this distribution wave.
What is the payout range?
Depending on what users documented, payouts range from under $100 for minor out-of-pocket costs up to a maximum cap of $2,500 for individuals who proved severe financial hits, such as replacement card fees or unrefunded charges.
A new chapter for platform security
While waiting for settlement checks to clear can feel like a slow process, the resolution brings some welcome changes for everyday users. This settlement is not just about the money; its terms also mandate stricter data security practices, pushing Cash App to bolster its fraud detection and identity verification measures.
So, if you filed your paperwork on time and your claim was approved, keep an eye out—your digital wallet or mailbox might just be getting a nice little boost this month. And if it doesn’t come this month, you can rest assured it will come at some point.
