Victoria Cartagena is returning to Gotham City.
Cartagena, who starred as Renee Montoya in the first season of the Fox series Gotham, has been cast to play the same character in the upcoming third season of The CW’s Batwoman.
But since Gotham is not part of the Arrowverse, Cartagena will be playing a different version of Montoya in Batwoman.
This latest TV incarnation of Montoya is a former Gotham City Police Department officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside. Relegated to a paper-pusher, she’s now in charge of the “freaks division,” which hasn’t seen a lot of action until now. Righteous and pragmatic, Montoya has a very personal and mysterious mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.
While Montoya’s long-term future on Batwoman is unclear, the character’s description suggests that the she may be moonlighting as The Question. In the comics, Montoya takes the mantle of The Question after the original vigilante, Vic Sage, dies.
As an LGBTQ+, Montoya could also become a love interest for Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder. In the comics, Montoya’s The Question has a popular flirty “will they, won’t they” chemistry with Batwoman, so it won’t be a surprise if the show decides to take this direction.
Cartagena took to Twitter to confirm her recasting as Montoya. “I guess #Reneemontoya and I have some unfinished business,” the actress wrote in a retweet of a post from Deadline, which broke the news. “So very excited to join this new group of talented artists, writers & crew who are doing their thing over here! They have welcomed me wholeheartedly! Grateful, humbled, hype AF… #batwoman #fullcircle”.
In addition to Gotham, Cartagena’s other recent acting credits include a series regular role on Fox’s Almost Family and recurring roles on Apple TV+ series Servant, NBC’s Manifest, and Lifetime/Netflix psychological thriller You.
Batwoman season 3 is set to premiere on October 13th at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
