Mattel has launched Barbie dolls for preschoolers that are age appropriate and specifically made for children ages 3 through 5.
Called My First Barbie, the doll was specially designed for kids aged 3 years old and older. The toy company started to develop a separate Barbie doll for preschoolers a year ago after it received multiple requests from parents to create a version of Barbie that small kids can play with more easily.
“We talk to parents and kids almost every day. Interestingly, what came up more and more from parents who grew up with Barbie themselves was that they wanted a Barbie doll that was easier to play with for little hands with less dexterity,” said Lisa McKnight, executive vice president and global head of Barbie and dolls for Mattel.
Though Mattel has released a number of My First Barbie-branded dolls in the past, the new My First Barbie Doll is the first version of the iconic doll that was designed with preschool children in mind.
How is My First Barbie different from the original Barbie doll?
My First Barbie is larger than the original Barbie doll. The former stands 13.5 inches tall, while the latter is only 11.5 inches in height.
My First Barbie also has a softer body and more articulated arms and legs, compared to those of the original version. It is also worth noting that My First Barbie has a wider larger waist that de-emphasizes the bust line. The doll also wears flesh-tone modesty undergarments that are permanently attached to the body.
The clothes that come with the new doll also appear more kid-like, thanks to the wholesome heart, star, and flower designs that adorned her jammies, dresses, and swim gear. The doll’s accessories are also larger in size, allowing little hands to grab them easily. The doll’s hair is also noticeably longer for easier brushing.
Like the earlier version of Barbie, My First Barbie features moveable limbs with thumbs that are connected with the rest of the fingers. “The hand is closed, so the thumb is not detached. We did this to make it easier for little hands to dress and undress the doll,” McKnight said of the distinctive design change to the doll’s hands.

My First Barbie is currently available in four skin tones: Renee doll, Teresa Doll, “Malibu” doll, and “Brooklyn” doll. Each of these dolls sells for $19.99 and includes 1 outfit with an accessory, 1 brush, 1 plush pet, and 1 pair of shoes.
The My First Barbie collection also includes additional accessories like shoes, purses, sun hats, swimsuits, and other clothing pieces, which are all sold separately. There are also bedroom and tea time play sets, which help kids improve their storytelling and roleplaying skills.
