Barbie is celebrating this year’s Dia De Muertos with new Barbie and Ken dolls inspired by the popular Mexican holiday.
Honoring the customs, symbols, and rituals often seen throughout this festive time of remembrance, the Barbie Dia De Muertos 2021 Doll wears a traditional dress embroidered with sugar skull and flower details. Her hair is adorned with a crown of marigolds with hidden skull details, which is complemented by a twisted headband detail. To accentuate her intriguing Calavera face painting, which continues to her neck and forms a delicate skeleton, Barbie’s hair is pulled back. Completing her look are huge gray earrings, a chunky pink bracelet, and purple high heels.
The Barbie Dia De Muertos 2021 Ken Doll, meanwhile, boasts a charro-inspired look featuring a serape and embroidered shirt adorned by a vibrant bowtie. He also wears a sombrero with a silvery sculpted sugar skull design that can also be found on his belt buckle. To complement his plain black pants, Ken opts for a matching brown belt and boots. Like Barbie, Ken’s face is also painted in a striking Calavera design.
Both Barbie and Ken dolls stand 13 inches tall and come in beautiful packaging featuring an original illustration. Ideal for display and gifting, both dolls are now available for preorder for $74.99 each at Entertainment Earth with shipping slated for October.
Aside from Mexico, Dia De Muertos, aka the Day of the Dead, is also celebrated in other countries with a significant Catholic population. Associated with the Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, Dia De Muertos is held every November 1st and 2nd and involves family and friends gathering to pray for and to remember loved ones who have died. It is commonly portrayed as a day of celebration rather than mourning.
